@steveparker8065 I agree. Every cell of my body hates the idea of hereditary privilege. But I am forced to admit that over the 50 years of my life, they have on the whole done a good job. Its the appointed life peers that seem to be the problem actually. You can hate the principle of the thing whilst accepting that it works [used to work] Lie an internal combustion engine - works, but needs replacing none the less...

@steveparker8065 - Well for me - I would like to see an upper house of professionals - scientists, professors, lawyers, engineers, union leaders, environmental scientists, economists and definitely NO ONE with a degree in politics from Oxford University. Then Id like them to be elected by proportional representation. No one gets directly elected - you vote for the party and the party put forward qualified people who can do the damn job. This way you dont get charismatic narcissists winning, it does not matter how good you are on camera, it matters how effective you are at governing. Give them a 10 year term staggered 50% elected every 5 years, so they can plan longer term than the elected commons. Obviously, we wont get this - we will get charismatic narcissists with a Polly Pych degree from Oxford and an "education" at Eaton... Systems dont give up power. If the Lords is replaces the establishment will make sure its replaced with something more to their advantage.

@steveparker8065 - NO they wont like it or anything that removes their privilege. So it is almost certain that Gordon Brown will come up with a decent system, then it will be watered down to nothing and then that new system will be infiltrated by the "elitist products of the shallow end of the British gene pool". Systems Evolution - any system sufficiently complex evolves to replicate itself and to protect itself. This is why I am generally very cautious of change in the British political system. Do I like the ide of a King - NO. Do I like the idea of President Boris Johnson even less YES. People tend to have utopian ideas when they advocate for change when in reality every change is a new opportunity for the most loathsome to take advantage. Everyone thought social media would make the world better, that it would be a massive force for good - it was the exact opposite. I have the worry that our hopes for a better governing system may be social media.

" If you have a French name you are incredibly likley to be in the to 20% of British society. A name like de Pfeffel... This privilege goes back to 1066... EVEN AS A RAGING SOCIALIST I have always been a big supporter of the Lords - despite its unelected nature it worked well - This lot of Tories have ruined it... But it cant just be more of the same House Of Commons BS - they can start with PR for the upper chamber
