I AM A MASSIVE ADVOCATE OF ORACY the one thing I was taught at school that made the biggest difference to my life was critical thinking. The one thing I was NOT taught that would have made a massive difference was ORACY...!!! At 53 y/o I am now actively learning debate and oration - and I am starting to learn how the posh tw4ts get all the top jobs...!

@darthwiizius I completely agree - Im dyslexic and bad at reading. I was so ashamed of my writing and speaking by extension that my entire life I never wrote in front of other people if I could possibly avoid it. Now Im a professional author, earning my every penny from the books I have written. Turns out, writing is about telling a compelling story not perfect spelling, we have proof readers from that, But the terror of standing up and reading haunted me my entire life and it held me back.

@keithhigh7773 YES I was educated at Batley Boys High School. I think I was one of the last to be educated in critical thinking, though it was not called that. The words "Starting from first principles prove... X". were the absolute bane of my childhood. You were NOT allowed to just use a formula or a fact without starting at the very beginning and working towards the formula you needed / the fact you relied upon. ""Starting from first principles explain the battle of 1066" it meant you had to go away and work out WHY the battle happened before you could describe the battle - I hated it intensely. But it was by far and away the most important thing I learned. Things DONT happen in isolation, problems dont just pop up out of nowhere. EDIT - Despite being a crappy comprehensive the school had pretensions of being a public school. We had "quads" and the teachers were "Masters" who walked around in back gowns and mortar boards, multiple levels of prefect and head of upper and head of lower sixth and stuff - all very weird. I think the critical thinking may be a practical pretension.
