I LIVE IN BULGARIA 100% of my food is grown or reared in Bulgaria. I don't even buy food out of season, I buy the maximum I can from the local shop who serve the local growers. What is sad is the Balkan Black pigs no longer go to our butcher, they go to Italy for the dried meats and we have the standard pink pig now :-(

@DanthaManYO - OH don't get me wrong I'm not "blaming the EU". Im sure the Bulgarian pig farmers are over the moon to be getting more money for their pigs. Im British and I moved here cos of freedom of movement, an EU thing. I was just acknowledging that being part of the EU did help facilitate this development. Bulgaria is doing a good job of modernising without westernising and certainly not Americanising anything like as much as the UK or Germany have. "All places are becoming the same." I used to visit Prague every Christmas, it was the most magical fairytale place on earth, eventually I stopped because it was no different to Leeds just more snow. KFC, Pizza Hut, Tesco, McD's, Mango, Monsoon, Nike etc. I hate this neoliberal capitalist aspect of globalisation. If I visit Lincolnshire I want it to be different to Liechtenstein. I'm an immigrant - I am in favour of immigration. But I am dead against homogenisation. I dont even associate with the British people here, they live in their little enclaves and drink beer all day watching British football, 86 families in my apartment block and I am the only British person.

@theSTUNTHAMSTER - I would literally rather shoot myself in the head. I eat a very very low-carb diet, I had some rye bread yesterday and the joints in my fingers hurt like hell today because of it. You do you, but I am high fat low carb...

@DanthaManYO In a way yes. In a way it was the pandemic's fault. After the pandemic, there were supply chain shortages etc and buyers started to look to new markets and the Italian meat companies found our small pig farmers and they would pay more wholesale than we were used to paying retail. It used to be illegal for foreign countries to own Bulgarian companies but that had to change with entering the EU. What happened - American food giants bought out all the local food companies, added sugar to everything and we went from 8% obesity to 25% in 10 years. Im a staunch remainder but Im not actually a massive fan of the EU or globalisation, I think they are homogenising the world. But Brexit was not about retaining national identity and industries, about shortening supply chains and being more self-sufficient. It was about lies, fantasies, racism and economic suicide.
