A Different Bias

THERE IS A WIDELY BELIEVED MYTH that the people at the top of the ladder in business and politics are intelligent, capable people - this is rarely the case... I used to teach these people to use the large Audio Visual presentation systems our company installed - they are very often the thickest people in the company. One guy who was the CEO of a well known London financial firm was dissatisfied with "real time" stock prices and wanted them faster - an hour it took to explain how time works.

Sandy Munro - a senior technical consultant to the auto trade in the USA - said Elon Musk is the ONLY CEO of an American car company that knows ANYTHING about making cars; all the others just know about manipulating stock prices and outsourcing to cut costs. And like the USA, the UK hire MBA's as CEO's and not engineers / scientists / professionals.

@pf844 - The problem is you cant insult them with your answer and you cant upset them and you certainly cant make them look thick in front of the other employees of the company - cos they have ultimate power and you will never get another order - so HOW do you convey information to them, when they are clearly being thick AF. And this is THE PROBLEM. No one tells them the truth "you're thick as f-uk", everyone grovels and everyone in the company effectively works to keep them artificially afloat Their only real talent is talking posh and bing important enough that other people cover for you. @justmythought7658 - I THINK it still exists in Japan and certainly in Germany its the norm to be an engineer to be in a senior position in an engineering company. But more generally the CEO of an engineering company will have gone to a public school, a top university and have a business degree for sure.

@L2K4D44L4R This is a fairly ridiculous statement by you. You need to see what Tesla is doing - but obviously, you know better than the worlds leading expert on car production, a guy who BMW, VW, Volvo pay to take their cars apart and tell them whats wrong with them and how they can improve them... This sounds plausible.

@pf844 - I had been working on getting a very large technical contract for a company - £1.3 million. I got a new director who came to a meeting with me. I GOT the contract and got fired...!!! He had told the MD that I had totally botched it, but his genius had managed to clinch the deal we were otherwise losing. 2 years I had worked on that deal before he even arrived at the company. Why did he arrive at the company - he was a friend of the MD...

@atomiccritter6492 - Funnily enough. That same Sandy Munro was asked "what would happen to Tesla is Elon Musk died tomorrow" and I was expecting him to say "It would collapse" - but actually he said "It would be fine, he hires the best engineers in the world and then promoted the best ones to run the company, Tesla is just full to the brim with incredible talent" He also said there are basically only two western car companies now - Tesla and VW - the rest are walking dead.

@justmythought7658 - that's a pity - and that will cost Germany. Its dominance is built on solid engineering. BUT that said I have owned every Mercedes S-Class from 1999 to the last one and they are steadily getting worse in build quality. "Luxury" is taking over from "quality". Id rather have a door that closes like a bank vault then one that closes electronically - which will break in 3 years. BUT engineering is expensive and electronics are cheap.
