@justmythought7658 - YES I live in Bulgaria now and I have talked to hundreds of people about the communist times. It fascinates me. The first thing is - it was very varied, not the monolith of misery it was made out to be in the west. In Romania, it was genuinely as horrible as we were told in the west. Here in Bulgaria they seem to have had a great time of it. So much so that in the last election over 50% of people over 60 years old voted to return to communism... And yes here they had food - and most people moan now that the quality if food is not as good as in the communist days. Unlike us in the west where we are trained to believe that more choice is automatically better, they would rather have a choice of 2 different high-quality sausages than 30 varieties of industrially produced crap sausages. You have to be TRAINED to appreciate choice. To them its just a confusing mess on the shelf, they just want sausages. They don't want to spend 20 minutes deciphering packages with fake pictures on them.

@adblocker276 -I have travelled independently in 53 different countries and that is irrelevant to this cos - INTERNET. A 6 year old in Cornwall who has never left their village can know what Dubai/Mumba look like. So lets get to the point - why are you trying to make this about ME when this is about the state of the UK..??? Thats called deflection, why are you deflecting?

@G_C340 - Rarely have I agreed more with a comment on YouTube. I see it all the time. I have lived in Bulgaria 12 years and so many of my friends and neighbours have longed to go work in the UK, or Germany and they go - THEN after 3 to 5 years they are back. YES the wages are better - but they hate the lack of society and community. They see homeless people for the first time... And as you say - the people in the old Soviet Union - they assumed that capitalism was like communism but with more money and more luxury. They did not realise it comes with a very heavy penalty. Its great for the top 10% but gets exponentially worse as you go down the ladder of poverty.

@pansepot1490 - I fully agree - its anecdotal. But there is no nostalgia for the communist times in Romania that's for sure... But for me as a westerner, it was fascinating that people had good memories - I was conditioned to believe that they would all hate it and absolutely LOVE capitalism, NOPE not the case. Very mixed views.

@gurkslunga - You joke - but they are NOT super big fans of democracy either. They do kinda see it as an imposition. To them its like "you are the politicians, its YOUR job to sort things out - stop asking us to make decisions - Im a plumber, I don't know the answer" And secondly - "you are all corrupt, what difference does it make" Democracy is a bit like endless choice at the supermarket - you have to be taught to like it

@ingridschmid1709 - NO it was likely me - I do have long covid. It is currently making my life miserable as it has decided to launch an all out immune response to what would normally be a slightly itchy nose from getting the wool blankets out. But this year it has put me in bed for a week. Covid is the strangest illness I have ever had.
