  1. Did you live in Romania by any chance..??? I have friends there and their memories are very very similar. On the opposite side, here in Bulgaria where I live now, one of the classic movies of the 1970's is a comedy taking the mickey out of the communist system which was made and aired on state TV [its genuinely funny actually]. The thing people don't get in the west is that communism was incredibly varied. It was not a monolith. The people of Bulgaria had a good life and 75% of over 60's voted communist in the last election. Next door in Romania it was hell on earth.
