@fly89 - I was watching the comedy Santa Clarita Diet. I genuinely thought the neighbourhood was entirely a TV set till I mentioned it to a friend and she said NO - that's real, people live there. It was genuinely every cliche of American life brought to life.

@L33tSkE3t - I now live in Bulgaria. Born in the UK. No one in Bulgaria is told as a kid they are special. they are not told they are UNIQUE and they should do what THEY want and that THEIR happiness is what matters most. And as a Brit brought up on a diet of American exported movies and culture - this was TERRIBLE to me. This was everything that could possibly be wrong with the way you bring a child up. to tell them that you are not special, you are just one member of society - UGH. What about dreams and goals and etc etc etc. After 12 years I have realised that the reasons I moved to Bulgaria in the first place - the society, the community, the kindness, the decency, the pleasant teenagers who talk to you, the neighbours who help you with a problem - that's ALL a result of this upbringing. Telling people they are special is just breeding selfish antisocial monsters. And when you live in a society that still has cohesion and you feel PART of that society - you don't need to feel "special", you don't need to feel "important"... Moving to Bulgaria has been very humbling for me. I thought my world view was "the right way" - I realised that actually. It only applies in YOUR culture. Your world view is incredibly specific and it only applies in your culture and actually, most of the western culture is badly badly broken. OH - and we were totally lied to about communism - nothing like it was made out to be... Doth way better and way worse than we were tole - but what we were told was a total pack of lies. Who could believe it - our governments lied to us??? Shock.
