Synthetic fabrics also leach hormone-mimicking chemicals into the skin especially when you are hot and sweaty i.e. the gym. An [ex] friend of mine worked as a chemical engineer for a textile company in the Netherlands trying to find a solution before this issue became a public concern

In 1999 I went to Prague in December in my brand new £500 goretex coat - when I turned the first corner out of the hotel and the 40mph wind at -30ºC hit me every bit of body heat shot off down the road at 40mph... My strong views on the ethics of fur disappeared at the same speed and an hour later I had a fur coat and hat on. Goretex is astonishing sh!t.

I MAKE AND WEAR HISTORICAL CLOTHING EVERY DAY - I WEAR WOOL wool with a "nap" will keep off light to medium rain indefinitely, heavy rain for 15 to 20 minutes before it starts to wet the fabric, but then is has to penetrate to your under clothes and that may take another 30 minutes and now often is rain heavy for 45 minutes? - but even if it is soaked through wool retains 80% of its insulation capability.
