  1. IN 1957 THE BBC COMMITED The spaghetti-tree hoax - it was actually an April Fools Day joke - but the BBC, which had seen the UK through the war, was SO respected that everyone believed it. My mother, a lecturer at Leeds University, went to her grave believing spaghetti grew on trees. The idea that the BBC would say something untrue, or omit a truth was utterly inconceivable to people in the 50's and the 60's. If the BBC reverted to truth, no one would begrudge the licence fee. If they keep going - they will be gone in 20 years.
