THERE IS ANOTHER great painting of similar importance portraying "Dido Elizabeth Belle" it portrays English aristocracy and Dido is the adopted daughter of the Earl of Lindsay She was born into slavery and illegitimate; her mother, Maria Belle, was an African slave in the British West Indies. There is a fantastic program about it called "A Stitch in Time s01e04 Dido Belle" Ill post a link as a separate comment. It was not "Normal" but it certainly did happen that African girls and boys were adopted as equals in British society.
