  1. The American war of Independence was 100% about not paying taxes to cover the cost of the protection Britain provided. The French were harassing the US colonies, Britain sent ships to get rid of them and then said "OK these taxes you have not been paying for decades, you have to pay them cos this is really expensive" America said NO. Britain said "OK we will HALVE the tax - but we are sending tax inspectors to make sure you pay" America declared war to avoid the tax and then when they won the govt said "sh!t this is really expensive having an army, you guys have got to pay tax to the govt" and that set off a whole new argument... France literally bankrupt its self helping America get independent and then when the British and French were at war a few years later America BROKE the very first treaty it had signed - wiht France to come to their aid in the event of war - and AUCTIONED OFF ITS HELP to the highest bidder between Britain and France to once again avoid paying for the army by taxation...
