@notnek202 - You missed the two biggest issues - one for and one against plastic.
The amount of energy required to transport a glass bottle from a factory to a warehouse to a shop to your home, and all the way back again is vastly more than the energy required to transport a plastic bottle, and it's very often more oil used to transport the glass bottle, then used to make the plastic bottle.
On the other hand, the plastic bottle is lowering your sperm count dramatically as it leeches, estrogen-mimicking chemicals into your food and that's a massive problem.
The biggest issue which you did touch upon is the lack of decomposition. If you watch the series time team, they dig up a rubbish dump from the 1960s, that covers some archaeology, all the plastic is still there. Everything else is rotted away. Even the metal glass is broken into effective gravel, but the plastic is not touched. The land would be perfectly good for agriculture, but you can't plow it because it's full of plastic bags.

@billthecook4357 - Well as a European it would be my natural reaction to call you crazy for the guns, but you live in a country with 400 million guns, if things get bad they will likely get REALLY bad.
I'm about to publish a book called "ADRIFT IN THE SHARK TANK - how to cope in a post-pandemic world" - its not a preppers guide, its a psychological manual, but this is a section you might relate to:
So your number ONE top priority in life is to clear any debt you have and to never take any more debt on unless it is to start a business or buy a house. Do absolutely everything humanly possible to clear every penny of debt you have, I mean go to extreme lengths. Go around your house and put a little sticker on everything you have not used for the last 12 months - you don't need it, put it on eBay and sell it. Even if you only get $5 for an item - that's $10, $20 even $50 over the lifetime of that debt you are clearing off. Cos $5 can be the difference in a payment happening or a payment “bouncing” and then you will be hit with late fees.
Stop buying ANYTHING that is not food, a necessity for your children, an absolute necessity for life and pay off those debts in the order of most horrifically expensive.
PayDay loans first.
Credit cards second.
Car finance third.
Bank loans fourth.
Mortgage fith.
---§---
This is another section and the one that 99.95 of people fall foul of.
REALITY LAG
‘I haven't learned how to confront a problem by avoiding it.’
Brian Spellman
People’s admission and acceptance of the reality of any given bad situation is always rolling six months to one year behind reality.
This is largely why small businesses go bust, people ignore the red flags for way too long. This is how people end up trapped in an abusive relationship - because they make excuses for the first year and ignore people ignore the red flags. This is how people wind up in a dictatorship, because people ignore the red flags...
...When the universe sends you a hurricane warning via the weather service, it’s probably a good time to board up your house and evacuate. That way you have the best chance of surviving and your property surviving. That's not being pessimistic or unambitious. That's just being sensible, heading the warnings and preparing.
But when the universe sends us a warning that things are not that great with our small business, or our relationship, or our finances, the vast majority of us say, ‘It will be OK’, ‘it will work its self out’, ‘we’ve had hard times before…’
Toxic Positivity has trained us to ignore reality for fear of being ‘negative’ and ‘pessimistic’ when in reality all we would be is prepared. We seek out motivational material to overcome any temporary lag in our relentless and socially approved of positivity. And we deny the reality of our situation.

@Rose-hx9vk NO - wrong again. Im 52 years old. I have travelled in 53 countries, lived on 23 continents, I'm an author on psychology and the collapse of civilisations - and NO I dont care about your personal property. "Research Cuba" - I've interviewed over 1000 people who lived under communism in the ex-soviet union - I am LITERALLY typing this IN the ex-Soviet Union. I speak Russian and Bulgarian дори мога да чета и пиша на български. And the schools under communism were FANTASTIC, so shut up with that BS for starters. Many of the people I interviewed had 2, 3 even 4 university degrees.
AND NO they do NOT thank the USA for bankrupting the USDSR they hate you for it - you destroyed their lives.
OH - the USA is collapsing - you have entered "cascading systems failure" and there is no way out...
This is the list of contributing factors to societal collapse:
Plague / disease Y
Environmental change Y
Massive wealth inequality Y
Loss of the administrative class Y
The government stops governing Y
Attack from the outside - now includes cyber attack Y
Loss of faith in the political system Y
Economic collapse Y
Exposed obvious corruption Y
Crumbling infrastructure Y
Mismanagement of a crisis Y
Societal division Y
Loss of belief in the unity of the society Y
Restriction of international trade / loss of trade agreements Y
Increased isolationism Y
Rising internal violence Y
Excessive spending on military / arms race Y
Inability to maintain the currency - hoarding / devaluation / hyper inflation Y
If a majority of things on the list happen to a civilisation simultaneously, it is invariably the end for that civilisation. If all happen at the same time, it's guaranteed to be the end. The USSR collapsed with 9 out of the 18.
America scores 18/18. And you have reached "cascading interconnected systems failure" - everything is broken and everything you need to fix it is also broken.
The only question left is can you MANAGE the collapse? Will it be like the end of the British Empire - or Yugoslavia 1992 with way more guns.
---§---
Capitalism is inherently self-cannibalising - you won't like it, but Marx pointed this out 150 years ago. Just cos you dont like Marx does not mean he was wrong, and sadly for the west, he was right. Capitalism is a funnel that steadily moves wealth to the top. When it has emptied out the working class it starts on the middle class. unless you heavily tax the top and spend the money at the bottom the system LITERALLY runs out of money to function - and this is the USA 2022 with the Fed printing money to keep the system functioning.
Americans voted for tax cuts for 40 years and that has allowed the money to be vacuumed up by the top 1% - 3 people have the same wealth as the bottom 50% - the SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO CONTINUE FUNCTIONING.
The solution for each president "print money" and kick the can down the road till after the next election when its not my problem.
- so no, I'm not young, I'm old and this is my job, analysing how civilisations collapse and how people contribute to that and react to it.
my next book "how to cope in a collapsing society" will be out this year - you should keep an eye out for it.

@elyssay3157 - Ok I am going to send you a link to a study in a separate comment cos YouTube often deletes messages with outside links thinking they are spam and I don't want to have to re-type this. If you cont get it just Google "Frontiers in Psychology Facebook study". The problem with these studies is they tend to focus on ONE specific question and the answer to any Facebook related question is "yes it makes you more miserable" or similar.
The issue is the combined effect - it makes everyone more miserable the longer you are on it and the more "friends" you have on there, but combine that with external stresses [they have to eliminate or account for these in studies for obvious reasons] and it is a multiplying effect.
My job - it is on the whole incredibly rewarding. I work for free [my income comes from the books I have written] so it would have to be pretty rewarding to do it for free.
Ill be honest - you get numb to the horror. I have clients that have been set on fire, I have clients that have been turned into drug addicts, beaten if they want to stop the drugs, clients who have been systematically tortured, raped, cut, abused, you name it. But its like the green numbers in the matrix movie.
Its background, its their story but it does not affect me [I cant let it] and it does not actually affect their recovery very much. There is little difference between coming to terms with the psychological effects of any of the things I have just mentioned.
Abuse is abuse, trauma is trauma, and the human mind deals with them all in remarkably similar ways.

@Titan500J - Well credit to you - and I mean that. Only one time in 1000 does someone say "I stand corrected" and that sets you apart from a hell of a lot of people.
"would you want Sean Hannity CNN, MSNBC to balance what there saying" NO - I would want news channels to be funded by cooperatives OR the shares only owned by SMALL ordinary investors. You are not allowed to own more than say - 50 shares of any media outlet.
Who are the real kings in this world???
The people that own the media - the PEOPLE of America did not elect Trump - Rupert Murdoch elected Trump and that is horrifically toxic and dangerous.
If you want to know HOW dangerous - watch Sky News Australia. You think US media is bad - they called Greta Thunberg a child abuser the other week!!!
They said that today's youth has NOTHING to worry about with the climate at all, its all a con...
NOW you might argue about the REASONS for climate change in America but I don't think anyone is saying it is not happening...
Lets remember that Australia USED to have a "Great Barrier Reef" no longer, and half the country was on fire last year.
The whole of western civilisation is screwed, everything is owned by the billionaires - the Kings - the media, the politicians of all parties, the corporations, and almost ALL the money - there is no money LEFT in the US economy, it is sat in the bank accounts of billionaires.
Why do you think Bezos's $500 million yacht has sails - which prevent helicopters landing so it needs a support yacht...??? You think that is to be environmentally friendly??
NO - its so that it can run indefinitely without refuelling if and when the USA erupts in revolution against the rich and its too dangerous to dock for fuel.
Superyachts are SOLD as safe refuges from the revolution - that is literally IN THE SALES LITERATURE as the main selling point. And sales of superyachts are through the roof...
There is no such thing as right wing or left wing - there are rich and poor. Everything else is just a distraction from the pitchforks and the revolution.
But collapse is coming to the USA, and as horrible as it is, its NEEDED. And its needed in my own home country of the UK - they are about 5 to 10 years behind the USA in collapsing...
Sorry for the long post.

@lemdixon01 - "How do you think that a gender studies degree is in any way on the whole useful for society" You have literally never googled what a degree in gender studies entails or what use it is have you...??
What you think is "It contains the words gender, I hate transgender people, therefore I hate people who do gender studies" as confirmed by your bigoted idea they would likely be on hormone treatment. Let me give you an example, in the military, you have male and female pilots - you NEED to know if they process information differently in stressful situations THATS GENDER STUDIES.
People with gender studies degrees work in the aviation industry on designing flight control user interfaces.
White men in their 30' to 50's kill themselves as the highest rate of any section of society by a frightening margin, finding out why so we can stop it - THATS GENDER STUDIES
These dead men - 30,000 a year - they are usually right wing.
You might have an old degree in electronics - but you are a bigot and it clouds your view of the world. ALL EDUCATION HAS APPLICATION. You are just too bigoted to see it.
EDIT: You literally made a 17 minute video on "Conspiracy Genderless Future". You also made multiple comments that it was an FBI agent pretending to be a Trump supporter in the plane. Im telling you now as a decent human being and someone who has to put people back together after psychological trauma - you need to stop going down this rabbit hole of conspiracy and hatred.
I will tell you where this all ends. It ends with your family disowning you, you losing your job for being a weirdo, it possibly ends with you being arrested for doing something dodgy - the police and the FBI don't LIKE people with electronic knowledge and crackpot ideas, this usually has bad endings.
You are heading down a very bad rabbit hole that never ends well for anyone who goes down it. There is not great conspiracy - its "systems evolution" - tens of millions of vested interests all pushing in the same direction - the evolution of global systems.
I'm being nice to you now, cos your channel throws up like 20 massive red flags. If you keep going down this path, you will die regretting it.

@lauralishes1 HAHAHAHAHHAHAH QUOTE " These people are saying "they shouldn't have the right to speak"" YES and that is their RIGHT under your constitution to say that.
They have the RIGHT to call for these people to be silenced and SORRY, but they have a constitutional right to call for that and to protest to get that.
Freedom of speech is freedom of speech, and I'm sorry, but calling for another person to be silenced, is just exercising your freedom of speech, no matter how hypocritical it might be. Let's be realistic hypocrisy is the foundation upon which the right when is built.
" ridiculous statements like there's no such thing as biological sex " No one is saying that - you dont know the difference between sex and gender
"Seriously I'm not even a conservative," but you are arent you? Maybe not a foaming at the mouth rabies infected MAGA but you no ones Marxest, you are to the right of the political spectrum.
THE PROBLEM WITH AMERICA is for all your endless banging on about the freedom of speech, almost none of you actually understand the fundamentals of freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech is the right to say a thing, and not be stopped, or imprisoned by the government for saying, with limited exceptions for the direct incitement to violence or endangerment.

@TheNewsInASL You could not be more wrong - end-stage capitalism is why your country is collapsing. Am3ric4 will NOT BE a capitalist country in 50 years.
You cant build anything, you cant make anything, everything is financialised and collapsing, Beoiing cant even make planes it is that corrupted and hyper-financialised - yet you NEED planes, but if you bail Beoing out [and yes it is going to go bankrupt] they will just use the money for stock buy backs and dividends.
But you still need planes - so they will have to be nationalised - and this is the fate of every Am3ric4n corporation - monopoly, hyper financialisation, incompetence, collapse, nationalisation - so by an organic collapse of end-stage capitalism you WILL become a type of communist economy.
You see the problem is you stopped educating people in 1983. so you think "Capitalism, not Communism, is the answer." is an acceptable answer to a vastly complicated question - and that is why you are collapsing.

@jimmccullough1937 - Ill pay attention to what I want. Jack sh!t you can do about it.
"We have guns here. So what" so 40,000 of you die each year. 40,000 of your fellow Americans - but "so what" hey, you dont care, they are not you - right?
"A small percentage fall into the wrong hands and make news." 324 mass shooting this year alone in the USA. 40,000 dead last year - a small percentage
"You can't control Crazy" you LITERALLY can control crazy, its not a "crazy" problem - its a broken collapsing society problem. This is the list of contributing factors to societal collapse:
Plague / disease Yes
Environmental change Y
Massive wealth inequality Y
Loss of the administrative class Y
The government stops governing Y
Attack from the outside - now includes cyber attack Y
Loss of faith in the political system Y
Economic collapse Y
Exposed obvious corruption Y
Crumbling infrastructure Y
Mismanagement of a crisis Y
Societal division Y
Loss of belief in the unity of the society Y
Restriction of international trade / loss of trade agreements Y
Increased isolationism Y
Rising internal violence Y
Excessive spending on military / arms race Y
Inability to maintain the currency - hoarding / devaluation / inflation Y
If a majority of things on the list happen to a civilisation simultaneously, it is invariably the end for that civilisation. If all happen at the same time, it's guaranteed to be the end. The USSR collapsed with 9 out of the 18.
America scores 18/18. And you have reached "cascading interconnected systems failure" - everything is broken and everything you need to fix it is also broken.
The only question left is can you MANAGE the collapse? Will it be like the end of the British Empire - or Yugoslavia 1992 with way more guns.
---§---
Suck it up buttercup - the empire is over, this is what collapse looks like.
" the minute you are threatened by another European neighbor, here comes all the scary Americans" - 75 years ago dude, you have not won a war for 75 years, you have LOST every war since the 2nd world war.

@billthecook4357 Bill - I listen to so much total bullsh!t from people on YouTube comments, honestly no one has got closer to the truth of the situation than you have. I get to spend 8 hours a day for 3 years thinking about this and calling it work, I understand that most people can't have an in-depth understanding, they have not got the time. But it does distress me how wide of the mark the vast majority of people are. Here is another chapter, but you know it already, sorry its a bit long.
IS CIVILISATION COLLAPSING?
‘Whether we like it or not, change comes. And the greater the resistance, the greater the pain.’
Alan Watts
YES, civilisation is collapsing. At least in the U.S.A. and the UK, and in the west more generally.
That is a bit depressing. Not the best way to start a book. But I'm not trying to make you happy. I'm trying to give you the tools to cope with what is happening. And denying the reality of what is happening is, as we have discussed, NOT a coping strategy!
Denying the reality of what is happening is what gets most people into most of the serious trouble in their lives: not opening that stack of overdue bills because it’s just too depressing to face, not calling the car finance company when you can’t make a payment because you just can’t face it.
So, we have to first acknowledge the reality we are living in. And that reality is:
Life in the U.S.A. and the UK will never be the same again.
Everyone will have to cope with a new reality. A reality of life in a declining country.
And this happens. The Roman Empire collapsed. The USSR collapsed. The British Empire collapsed. And people lived through it.
And so will you!
Will you have to adapt? YES.
But that is largely the point of this book. Change is not in its self a ‘bad thing’, it’s just ‘a thing’.
It’s only bad when you cannot cope with it. And the first way people fail to cope with change is by denying it’s happening until it is too late and requires drastic upheaval in their lives.
The classic example is the failing small business.
First it’s a ‘bad week’, then it’s a ‘bad month’, then it’s a ‘bad patch’, then it’s a ‘bit worrying’, then it’s a ‘maybe we need to do more marketing’, then it’s ‘we have to think about cutting down spending’, then it’s ‘we really need to cut down on our spending’, and then it’s ‘we need to take drastic action!’
Then it’s bankruptcy a year or 18 months after the first red flags that something was wrong.
Over 25 years in business, I have watched this happen to people’s businesses time after time, even my own in the early days. Until I learned the lesson.
Everyone says the same, ‘we didn't act quick enough’, ‘we thought we were doing enough’, ‘we thought we had cut our spending down to nothing - but we were still spending hand over fist on things we did not need…!’
Humans deny realities they do not like.
They bury their head in the sand and hope for the best. When they should be preparing for the new reality.
Accepting the reality of your situation allows you to prepare for it physically, prepare for it financially, prepare for it mentally, and prepare for it emotionally.
So, let's have a look at the situation in the U.S.A. today from an historical perspective. Why do civilisations collapse?
Looking at all the historical analysis I can find and watching a lot of YouTube videos (when you are an author, watching YouTube videos counts as work), listening to podcasts and reading books, I have come up with this list of contributing factors to societal collapse:
Plague / disease
Environmental change
Massive wealth inequality
Loss of the administrative class
The government stops governing
Attack from the outside - now includes cyber attack
Loss of faith in the political system
Economic collapse
Exposed obvious corruption
Crumbling infrastructure
Mismanagement of a crisis
Societal division
Loss of belief in the unity of the society
Restriction of international trade / loss of trade agreements
Increased isolationism
Rising internal violence
Excessive spending on military / arms race
Inability to maintain the currency - hoarding / devaluation / hyper inflation
If a majority of things on the list happen to a civilisation simultaneously, it is invariably the end for that civilisation.
As I write this in May 2022, we can safely tick most, if not all, of these boxes for the U.S.A. and the UK.
If you live outside the U.S.A. and the UK, don't think you are getting off Scott free. Take a look at the list again. Most western countries tick off a good number of the collapse criterion.
I doubt many people would argue the U.S.A. is in a more perilous position right now, but everyone has a right to be worried about the future at the moment. You are not being paranoid. You have reason to worry.
Just because you are not living in the U.S.A. or the UK does not mean this book is irrelevant to you. This book is relevant to you if you are worried about your future.
Your society may not collapse, the U.S.A. may not collapse, I may be completely wrong. It only matters if you FEEL like the society around you is collapsing and you are having difficulty with that. Because at the end of the day, the universe is nothing but your perception of it and the feelings that engenders in you.
If you feel like the world is collapsing around you and you cannot cope - your world is collapsing. And that is all that counts.
---§---
Change is not the problem, its people's inability to cope with the change that is the problem. Clinging onto a past that no longer exists...

@Rose-hx9vk - Exactly - I did not say "all republicans are bad people" - Not ALL republicans are bad people. But the Republican party has a near-monopoly on truly bad people. Its self selecting. And its NOT just the Republican party. The right-wing party in any country has a near-monopoly of terrible people. There is even an experiment that proves this.
The Child In The Well Experiment
Mencius (fourth century BCE) was a Confucian philosopher. He proposed that all humans were inherently good. They all has “sprouts” of goodness, they just needed nurturing.
To demonstrate this he proposed the following. A young child is sat on a well, as you want by it falls screaming down the well. He says EVERYONE would run to help the child, call for help.
Recently this was tested. Subjects were taken to a room in a different city and there was a video screen of the space outside and it shows a well with a child on it. The subjects don't know this is a a pre recorded video, they think it is a live feed. As the “experiment” is being set up the child falls screaming down the well.
The theory is that 100% of people will react and call the assistant to go help the child.
This is not the case. 80% do exactly that, they go nuts and scream for help, run out the room to try and save the child, just what you would expect.
20% do NOTHING. They don't call for help, they don't get up and try to help and a significant proportion don't even register any facial emotions. They just passively watch a child die as if they were watching a commercial for shampoo.
Upon further investigation, the vast majority - close to 90% - of these that don't react are right wing to far right wing in their political views.
---§---
A sociopath, a narcissist, a psychopath is hardly likely to be drawn to the "let's be nice to everyone" party are they???

@Rose-hx9vk - No you have been extremely polite, exemplary. If I am a little short and snappy please forgive me. I am 250 miles south west of Odessa - the scene of some of the worst fighting in Ukraine; life is incredibly stressful here at the moment.
NO high taxes are not the answer, they are PART of the answer - but you actually mentioned the answer in your reply. EDUCATION. Almost ALL problems in society can be solved with education. And if you want to rob a society you first have to make it dumb.
I wrote this a few weeks ago:
In the late 1970's and early 80's computers became a thing and you could process lots of statistical data for the first time. And the political parties did... The data showed the GOP they would be demographic-ed out of existence in a couple of decades. It also showed the GOP that stupid badly educated people - amazingly - voted for them. Voted AGAINST their own interests, as blue-collar workers and for the GOP.
So the GOP started to breed their own supporters. They systematically defunded education - in 1976 education was 5.7% of GDP. In 1983 it was 3.4% Some of the specific changes they made were to STOP teaching critical thinking skills, skills that ALLOW people to spot a lie. And it was wildly
successful. America now has an uneducated subclass of 35% idiots and it is enough to swing elections.
BTW - I dont blame the Republicans. Its the GOP's job to move towards fascism and the Democrat's job to move towards socialism and its each other's job to stop it from happening. The Democrats totally sold out the working people of America and allowed the GOP to move so far to the right they have essentially lost their minds.
Its the Democrats that failed America and allowed this to happen by being pathetically weak sellouts.
---§---
I am - for want of a better phrase - a communist. I arrived in Bulgaria a foaming at the mouth capitalist and made millions of dollars selling Bulgarian cosmetics to people in America. But I was not happy, what is the point of a system that takes the money needed to live from thousands and gives it ot a few who dont need it and it does not even make them happy...
I suffered brain damage in a mugging and lost everything - I was homeless for a while and learned to live on next to nothing, I was way happier than I was when rich. I realised what people need is rich fulfilling lives not rich with money lives.
It was the fruit trees that made me a communist - everyone in my city gets 4 months of limitless FREE FRUIT cos there are thousands of fruit trees. Why - free fruit for the people and I thought OH MY GOD, you can actually design and build a society FOR THE PEOPLE...
You dont have to build it for profit, there IS a different way to do it.
So Im not a "Tanki" I don't want Soviet era communism, but I want a society that is built for THE PEOPLE, and one that does not rely on endless growth that the planet can not sustain - that would be good.
Sorry for the long posts.

@Rose-hx9vk - The Russian army is so totally hollowed out by corruption that it is utterly collapsing. One of the most visible examples are the tires on the truck, they are a Chinese FAKE version of a Michelin tire and they are no more than a movie prop. They will last a maximum of a month on the road and an hour off-road before they explode. There are videos of trucks driving along with the 4 back tires ALL blown out. Apparently, the Chinese fake version costs $500 and the original Michelin version $15,000 - the $14,500 difference paid for some oligarchs yacht.
For the first time today, I had a tiny hope that Russia might just straight up LOSE the war.
Tomorrow I am taking about 6 big bags of clothes and blankets to the Red Cross for the refugees that are starting to arrive in our city now.
Education - my education was based on critical thinking. We had to work everything out from first principles. At the beginning of the pandemic, I started a university degree on Ancient Chinese Philosophy. It was entirely geared around you passing the exam at the end of each week NOT on understanding or learning about philosophy. AT the end of the first year I had passed the exams but I knew nothing so I gave up - I was not interested in a certificate, I w3anted to UNDERSTAND Chinese philosophy and that is not what the course was about.
Communism - when you talk to people who lived under communism, its not so much an extreme political ideology as we see it in the west. Its a different way of structuring society. Where I live in Bulgaria, most people want to go back to communism who lived under it. In Romania next door it was a living hell. Communism wasn't a monoblock like we think of it, it was very varied. some places were really really good and others were like prison camps.
We were only told the prison camp version.
Emotionally Weak - hahahha - people see the fight and the courage of the Ukrainians and they are shocked, Im not. We had 100% mask compliance here, no one complained, no one protested, no one got their feelings hurt, no one has a months-long tantrum and I am sure it was the same in Ukraine. People in the west have had so little REAL to complain about for so long [as a society] that they fixate on the tiny things like having to wear a mask. Its the end of the world. After the USSR collapsed people starved to death in Eastern Europe - that was only 30 years ago. My friend Gia was sex trafficked by the Mafia in 2005, she escaped.
No one here complained about having to wear a mask.

2 1:400
3 1:8000
4 1:160,000

Sorry dude, Trump is going to prison. And when I say sorry - I REALLY mean sorry cos I bet my American friend £1000 back in 2020 that he would never "see the inside of a jail cell." But Ive lost that bet, I thought your country was way more corrupt than it is wiht rich old white men. But nope you screwed me over.
And I have accepted my loss and now I just want to get it over as quickly as possible - stick him in jail for a day next week and I can pay the £1000 and be done with it. Instead of waiting for another 2 years to find out I lost. Cos I will lose.
Trump will go to prison. Thats whY i know the odds...

@scurra1163 - Yeah nice try but you just scream insecurity and bitter resentment in every syllable you write. I got your motivation correct and you and I know it.
"'now you cant hate her cos she is massively left wing ' This one get's me. Why would I even remotely care? " cos if I had not clarified that you would have gone on a 1000-word rant about it - yes you are THAT transparent - I literally put in a pre-emptive block on that cos I didn't want to read it.
"The 'good old days' is almost always BS, no matter whose ideology is being discussed." and your evidence for this is...??? OH, your opinion, sorry thats not a valid argument.
"and as the generation that built the current system might have regrets at screwing it up, doesn't mean there recollections were correct. Just because the current system is corrupt or ineffective(and largely their generation's fault)" oh look scream insecurity and bitter resentment in every syllable
"You also make MASSIVE leaps of logic in your thoughts on my motivation" - yes I do - but Im right though, aren't I? You have no secure job, no prospects of buying a decent house, having kids will be a massive stretch is not an impossibility, university will bankrupt you - and you know what? EDIT: I don't think you are aware of just how astonishingly transparent you are.
YOU ARE 100% RIGHT TO BE P!SSED you got totally screwed over and lied to and it is completely unfair.
But don't tell me I don't know what I am doing or talking about. Cos you and me both know I do, and that's why you are so shouty cos truth hurts.
The bottom line is - on the whole LIFE WAS BETTER for the people who say life was better in the good old days. BECAUSE life in the USA was better for young people of their demographic in the 1950's 60's and 70's. It just wasn't better for everyone, and thats the bit they forget.
Anyone involved in the war effort that was white - they got an interest-free mortgage on a new house, you are going to remember that very fondly - but ONLY if you were white...
They are NOT excessively romanticising their lives - they are just missing their massive privilege...

@lamaahruloma4270 - You are one of the few people who has replied with a reasonably accurate description of what I have learned from hundreds of interviews.
The control, the paranoia and the lack of freedom were the things that people hated most - as far as I can tell. The lack of shiny consumer goods is not something people tend to mention, thats a thing we in the west obsessed about cos we had them and that is how WE measured success. People miss the lack of stress and worry, the knowledge they would have a job and a house next month no matter what. They also miss the community and feeling that everyone was connected and part of the same - everyone hated the government, you and your neighbour hated the government. Now you and you neighbour have different political views and hate each other...
There is a LOT of solace to be gained from having a united enemy you all hate.
As a westerner I came here expecting people to universally hate it, I believe the propaganda of the west, never even knew it was propaganda, I thought it was truth. I was incredibly surprised to find people with happy stories and many fond memories. I was even more shocked to find many people wishing to return to socialism - not to the USSR, they are not [not all anyway] Tankies - but many of them dont like democracy they feel it has turned neighbour against neighbour and pushed the job of making decisions onto them.
The variety and complexity is what caused me to start recording these stories - you have to be careful. There is no point in getting a story from an ex-party member, its not going to be a tru reflection of life under communism. Equally, people who wanted to flee cos they hated it, their stories are unreliable. You need the stories of the vast majority - those who just lived from day to day.
And that is the point most people miss. The vast majority complained about communism in the same way that most Americans complain about their government, its what people do, but they didn't hate it enough to ever think of leaving.
The other thing people in the west get wrong is it was NOT a monolith - it was very varied from country to country and even town to town and job to job. Saying "what was life like under communism" is an unanswerable question - what is life like under capitalism? Depends who you are, who your family is, what city you live in and what country...
QUOTE "you can get a better house in communism, but you must give something in exchange" Yes I think the going rate is about $1 million in the west...

@SonicPhonic - I absolutely cold not agree more. Personally, I think life under the USSR's communism would be absolutely horrible. I am not an advocate for Stalin in any way shape or form. Im just playing devil's advocate an pointing out to people that the idea we were fed in the west that life was universally hellish and everyone wanted to leave is simply not true, that was propaganda.
I was astonished when I arrived in 2009 from the Uk as a foaming-at-the-mouth business-owning capitalist to find that NO, a lot of people liked communism and wanted to return to it as an economic model. [NO they dont want to return to 1975, they are not idiots, they want to return to a socialist economic model but in 2023]
There is absolutely NO doubt the 40 to 50 million killed by Mao were actually killed BY Mao, he was offered help by the USSR to feed them and turned it down, he is responsible. Very personally responsible, but Im not entirely sure the communist economic SYSTEM was directly responsible, he made very very very bad decisions...
We dont blame Hitlers genocide on Capitalism do we? YET capitalism - specifically greedy American bankers and the Wall St collapse of 1929 is what brought Hitler to power, he ran on a platform of "the establishment sold you out to the American [J] Bankers and you lost your savings and the communists are coming to take your house off you - vote for me! It was very very specifically capitalism that created Hitler and we don't blame capitalism for the holocaust.
Quarter of a billion people have died under "capitalist" famines yet we dont label them "Capitalist famines" its just a Famine - there is one in Africa now, no one is calling out the world bank [capitalist] for killing people yet we blame the Soviet famines on communism.
Im not a Tanki - if "Stalin 2.0" came to power here I would leave immediately. But we need, as a species, to move on from capitalism to a more sustainable and equitable, fairer economic model. What Aron Bastani calls "Fully Automated Luxury Communism"

@joonzville This is a section of a chapter of my latest book, its aimed at disaffected desperate men in America, who tend to be right-wing and conservative and not read books so its has sold terribly. Which I knew it would, but the suicide rates are so horrific I had to make an effort. The problem is, you cant address the fundamental problems and NOT sound like a "leftie". [it is specifically written in an unintellectual manner]
"HE’S NOT A LEFTIE - HE’S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!
I'm very conscious that I might come across like a raging ‘leftie’ and that may put people off me and this book, deny them the help this book may offer them and politics is not my agenda here, so I want to address this issue head on.
If you are a hard-core right-wing Trump supporter, I don't care. You are a human being who wants the same as I do – a half decent life, the ability to feel safe and secure, be able to look after your family and provide for them, earn a decent living, save a bit of money, and not struggle every damn day of your life. You are no different to me, or to any person reading this book, it's what all humans want.
I don't believe in ‘left’ or ‘right’, these are labels put on people and ideas to ‘other’ and to ‘divide’. I'm not a ‘leftie’, I'm a person who has experienced a hell of a lot in life from extreme poverty and homelessness to literal millions £$€, and I’ve had the time to deeply reflect on it and this leads me to certain conclusions and insights that OTHER PEOPLE may have labelled as ‘left’.
And this is how academia gets labelled as ‘Leftist’.
In the same way it’s almost impossible to spend three years writing a book and not come up with something profound, it’s almost impossible to spend a life in academic study and thought and not arrive at a perspective that people have labelled ‘left wing’, unless financial interests induce you to lie about it.
The reason being, that the capitalist status quo wants one thing, the continuation of the status quo in all its inequitable and destructive murderous horror (we call this right wing) and everyone who has the time to think deeply enough to get past the propaganda, realises the same self-evident truths.
Believing that a system so obviously broken, as this one, needs replacing with a better, more equitable, more inclusive system, is NOT ‘left wing’:
it’s HUMANITARIAN!
I'm not ‘left wing’, academia is not ‘left win’, it’s just that given enough time and thought about the problems of society, everyone ends up coalescing around roughly the same ideas. These ideas are dangerous to the status quo so they are labelled, and demonised."

Im an author on psychology and the collapse of civilisations living in Europe. There is absolutely NO mystery why Trump was elected. The working people of America were TOTALLY betrayed by both the GOP and the Dems for 40 years, their jobs sent overseas, their towns abandoned to opium and rust.
Berni Sanders was very clearly the winner of the primary and the corporate POS Dems chated and served up HRH and 50 million forgotten Americans who had got their hopes up for change though F-UK YOU.
Trump lied to them, but at least he did not IGNORE THEM.
He spoke to the working class, HE SPOKE TO THEM, literally, he went and talked to them, it was lies but ti was ATTENTION for the first time in 40 years someone was paying them attention.
There is no mystery at all.
100,000 people in the heart of America died of opium overdoses last year, is it on the news every night "the Opium debate"? like the "Gun debate" NO - cos their lives DONT MATTER to anyone.
Trump supporters are the loneliest people in America BEFORE they became Trump supporters.
The life expectancy of a white male in the Missippie Delta is lower than that of a male in Bangladesh - the poorest part of the Indian subcontinent.
As a country, you have utterly abandoned these people to literally die. The fact "will always be the most perplexing question" for you shows that you have NEVER considered their plight.
The fact you have never considered their plight IS WHY TRUMP WON.

@ramirorodriguez9671 - I 100% agree. I commented this to a guy who said he could not understand HOW Trump got elected:
Im an author on psychology and the collapse of civilisations living in Europe. There is absolutely NO mystery why Trump was elected. The working people of America were TOTALLY betrayed by both the GOP and the Dems for 40 years, their jobs sent overseas, their towns abandoned to opium and rust.
Berni Sanders was very clearly the winner of the primary and the corporate POS Dems chated and served up HRC and 50 million forgotten Americans who had got their hopes up for change though F-UK YOU.
The fact "will always be the most perplexing question to me [how Trump got elected]" for you shows that you have NEVER considered their plight.
The fact you have never considered their plight IS WHY TRUMP WON.
