@toothguy441 Energy is not measured in "tons", that's a measurement of weight [mass at a stretch] unless you plan of turning it into energy via E=MC2 Its never good to be wrong when you are criticising others for being dum6

@DirectorBird - you invest in and plan for this with ship defectors upstream and downstream of each bridge pier capable of deflecting a ship of the maximum size and weight of the port facility. You dont LET the ship hit the bridge - but that takes money and investment and rich people needed tax cuts. Sunshine Skyway bridge in Florida. - same problem

@DirectorBird YES - its way easier to defect a ship moving at 9 knots. Its very hard to move a stationary ship cos yo are shoving the entire mass of the ship. You know when you put your hand out the car window and twist it slightly and it shoots UP, then you twist it the other way and it shoots down - its the same with a ship only on a much bigger and slower scale. You only have to move the bow of the ship a small amount and the length of the ship will cause it to swing [actually it will rotate around its centre of mass] - they have "bow thrusters" which are a tube running across the ship and they and a small propeller in them that push water out to the side - but these are electric and the ship clearly lost power Stopping a container ship is unbelievably difficult, deflecting one is very easy - this is why the deflectors are a long way away from the bridge so the angle of defection is very slight. I've sailed most of the large rivers in Europe - I am a qualified inland and coastal skipper up to 100m boat lengh

@AngryGaper - incredibly ignorant comment - you invest in and plan for this with ship defectors upstream and downstream of each bridge pier capable of deflecting a ship of the maximum size and weight of the port facility. Never good to be wrong when you are trying to criticise someone - also you spelt ignorant incorrectly.

@ZoomZoomMX3 - I dont know if the ship is overloaded - i cant imagine it with a US port. But the rest I 100% agree with, we need to stop buying plastic sh!t we don't need that we will throw away in 18 months. And YES tax online companies to refect the damage they do to society and to the environment AND put that money into the high streets so people have places to GO...!

@Lightning_aus you invest in and plan for this with ship defectors upstream and downstream of each bridge pier capable of deflecting a ship of the maximum size and weight of the port facility. What is it with you guys and big numbers - you mean 165k Tons, also that ship is 95k ton
1
@Lightning_aus - Dude stop being dum6. You keep posting this on every thread and you are wrong on multiple levels 1) the ship is 95k ton. Nuff said
1
@toothguy441 - shipping is measured in Tons, but energy is not. I think what you meant to say is "the kinetic energy of 96 thousand tons of ship..." I only pulled you up cos you were giving the OP some sh!t. A container ship is very heavy and has a VAST amount of kinetic energy, but they are surprisingly easy to deflect - water is very fluid, little tugs can push giant ships around - you are just redirecting the energy.

@ieditedmyname289 WRONG - $100 billion has been spent with US arms manufacturers paying US wages and US corporate profits and bom6s have been sent to Ukraine - NOT EVEN NEW ONES, the new ones got sent to the US army and the old ones got sent to Ukraine US aid goes to US companies - its still a con - just no the one you think it is

@maplebones " You've got tons of knowledge" there fixed it for you
1
@joek7080 - Yes they would - you invest in and plan for this with ship defectors upstream and downstream of each bridge pier capable of deflecting a ship of the maximum size and weight of the port facility. Do a search for "bridge fender system"
1
@StellarGale Yes looking at the track on the marine navigation system it looks like they went full astern and the "prop walk" swung the stern out to port and they hit the bridge. ironically the power line pylons DO have ship deflectors [if you see the aerial footage] but the bridge does not
