In fact you are probably a bigger criminal than the person you shoot, because murder/manslaughter is a way more serious crime than shoplifting. If you don’t care about the law why do you use the word “criminal”? A criminal is just someone who breaks the law.

It’s not happening. These companies are simply lying that retail theft is an increasing national problem. The average shrink rate as a percentage of sales dropped to 1.4% in 2021 from 1.6% in 2020, according to the latest NRF survey. That number has hovered around 1.4% for more than a decade.

So the only evidence that there is this massive national retail theft problem closing businesses is the word of these companies saying so, even though their own internal data doesn’t support their claims. And the reason they do this is because they want to encourage the public to support more right wing “tough on crime” policies against shoplifters because they think it will save them money, so they lie and exaggerate the shoplifting.

And also, less than half of that shrink is caused by retail theft. If you are actually considered about theft, wage theft has been identified as the largest type of theft in the United States. It is responsible for roughly 3 times as much economic loss as other types of theft combined. So how do you want to punish the companies stealing from their workers?
