  1. First - get out of your head any notion that Ukraine is a unified country. There's a sizable faction that's eager to hand the country over to Putin. Second - get in your head the notion of utter corruption. The pro-Putin faction is a powerful bunch of crooks who want to keep Ukraine as crooked and corrupt as it possibly can.

  2. Nonsense. The pro-Russia faction in Ukraine will neutralize the pro-West faction and gladly hand the country over to Putin - in the same way that Democrats would arrest every Republican leader ahead of an invasion by their beloved Xi.

What I imagine is that the situation right now has gotten untenable for the pro-Russia crooks - and they want a big piece of the pie restored to them ... or with Putin's help they'll just take it all. It must be heart-breaking to be pro-West in the Ukraine. That forward-looking faction has now to realize they'll never win - and Ukraine will always be Russia's poodle. It will always be poor. It will always be corrupt. They might as well give up. No one's coming to save them. It's just a tragic situation. No matter how popular the pro-West outlook gets in the Ukraine - the crooks and their bullying backer won't allow any election to stand that compromises their position. Imagine if there were no Pacific Ocean and China's shore were contiguous with America's. Every day the Democrats would be inviting Xi to invade us - so to force Republicans to make compromises that they otherwise wouldn't have to. It really is as disgusting in the Ukraine as that. : /

  10. There's no way Putin would attack a unified Ukraine. He's obviously counting on a major segment's welcoming him - in the same way that our Left Coast would welcome an invasion by Xi.

  14.  @DrRobato  That's exactly the kind of information I've been looking for - just what are the relative electoral strengths of these two factions. However - now factor in Russia's being poised to invade if the next election doesn't go its way. How does that swing the vote? Moreover - how does Russia's bold position shape the thinking of pro-West policy-makers - who are now one patriotic step away from spending the rest of their lives in prison? And remember - the West is not coming to help ... except maybe to secure a corridor of escape for these policy-makers.

And of course no one's going to benefit from Russian control but the pro-Russian mob - in the same way that no one benefits from Democrat Party control in America but pro-Democrat oligarchs. This is the way of corruption - of criminal gangs in government. Maybe in the end Putin knows he's beaten and just wants to cause trouble and look good in the eyes of other pro-Russian mobsters in the region. But if he's serious about securing Ukraine and destroying its future - then what's to prevent his doing the same in Lithuania? - since the way you describe Ukraine sounds as pro-West as Lithuania has become.
