@casualearth-dandavis wow, that’s amazing! Im planning to study science in the future (it’s hard tho im an Asian kid, ur parents just doesn’t allow it) and im really interested in climate and ecology. Im also in the worldbuilding community making fictional maps and trying to make it as accurate as possible so real life climates definitely help. I actually would love a guide for it (the guide rn isn’t bad but nowhere near perfect) but if no I will still love these videos. Thx!

@casualearth-dandavis btw, since you have already made a video about this place but i still have some questions , would you mind me asking it here? Why is the Sichuan basin so wet? You have already talked about it’s mild temperatures and fog but since it’s on the rain shadow of its surrounding mountains on pretty much all sides how can it maintain humidity? Does the air and Yangtze water just never leave the basin? Or are the mountains not that tall? Or is it something else?

And are you planning to do any uploads in the future? also, if you want an idea for a new video, just like another guy here I’m interested in the Horn of Africa desert and to actually finally understand why is it so dry. Also, anotehr interesting idea would be why is North America so cold and covered in such large ice sheet during the ice age

@casualearth-dandavis I see Btw, do you also know about it’s formation? Along with the Tarim basin which have a similar geography but I’m unsure about the formation. I’ve been looking into this for a while. I’ve seen the theory on the “hard bedrock” which makes the most sense but apparently there are also otehr theories and if this is true why is the bedrock so hard?

@casualearth-dandavis I see, i really wish you did some tbh XD. Also yeah, my parents want me to do med and in general just doesn’t support me to do anything science related ._. Rn the worldbuilding guide people follow is the old one by artifexian, which while not bad, some of the guides like his ocean cureent guide is, well, not perfect. Many people then spread his word wrongly which then makes the popular ones even worse (for example, that trans oceanic current in the north and south like the North Atlantic warm current part of the Gulf Stream, or the North Pacific cureent) is spread to transition at 30 deg which absolutely does not line up with real data. His climate map also fails to explain monsoons , which while isn’t a huge deal in mucn of the world today, is extremely relevant to many world builders who create super continents like Pangea, some even concentrated in one hemisphere which are capable of creating monsoons of immense size.

@tommygogetter5992 hmm,why? Afaik climate change doesn’t change the cell directions which makes spain dry, and the Occitainian mountains , the Pyrenees and alps are still thereto catch the moisture for France. Maybe south eastern France will get dryer. It won’t be as wet due to a slowing Gulf Stream but I don’t expect anywhere near the rain shadow of Spain. You see the coast of Portugal and Galicia being much wetter. The Gulf Stream slowing would allow the creeping in of continental climate, same one as Poland, into Germany and slowly into France.

@af8828 I want to ask that as well! Thx for asking first My best guess would be the Asian monsoon, or more the Afro Eurasian mega monsoon and counter monsoon, created by the low pressure regions of northern India sucks moist air from the Indian Ocean and the Middle East which extends to the horn. This is a connected system, connecting to the African monsoon which rams into the south of Ethiopia. Thus, it creates a rain shadow of the Ethiopian highlands right on the horn and it thus become a desert. The summer currents of the Indian Ocean which sucks up colder waters to flow across the horn and Arabian peninsula (seen from nasa ocean current map) surely doesn’t help. What I’m actually more surprised tho is the sheer range of this dry land down to the equator as well as how dry the Swahili coast is even when it’s surrounded by the East African highland and is rammed by the warm Mozambique current
