The three 5in guns and the bureau of ordinance Bureau of ordinance wanted for a 5in gun. The 5/51 was too heavy. The 5/25 was too weak. But the 5/38 was "just right". The end 🎭

Two most dangerous things that must be kept away from engineers at all times: 1- welding machines to make things bigger 2- hacksaws to make things smaller

@frankgulla2335 I agree, compromise usually fails to meet both goals. I suggest that the use case in close range combat during the Solomon islands campaign minimized the range lost in anti ship fire role. While at the same time, a longer barrel with powered movement made it a better AA gun in an environment chock full of land base airplane threats. They couldn't have foreseen this, island hoping and "withering on the vine" were not the original plan orange/rainbow. But they DID hit a sweetspot with the 38. Regards

Rapid fire 5in barrel life. Do smaller guns have better life than battleship size rifles? Much better life? Are these smaller barrels easier/cheaper/faster to change liners?
