  4.  @Cld_Brn  the ramp itself was made of steel, and could stop "small arms" fire... so maybe good enough to stop a 0.50 round fired from afar? -ish..? The sides of the boat were plywood. Armour was bolted on the sides later. Some people say 1/4 in plate. Again, small arms only.

  6.  @ArcticTemper  loosing Suez would have complicated the supply to/from India. That was why it was so important. It was difficult getting to Malta from the West ( Gibraltar). From the east (Alexandria) it was "easier".
