Planners will fudge the numbers to justify it. Since life is priceless this is a butcher's business, not a moral calculus. The decisions makers giving these orders should take this as a very heavy burden. And the men that volunteer to execute these orders are truly remarkable.

  3.  @DraftySatyr  Totally agree. I would hope that ALL command staff are "half way" decent or better. And most soldiers go into battle with the belief that it is so.
