  1. Keep in mind that the greatest obstacle to chocolate candy was the sugar itself. Cane sugar was expensive, had to be refined from molasses, and molasses came from tropical areas. Beet sugar only became available in industrial volumes after 1830s.

  7. It doesn't matter what the government says they are "saving" or "protecting". One day swamps are useless, later they are precious. But do note that poverty DID NOT CHANGE by the government intervention, one way or the other. Only private enterprise creates wealth. All government programs are wasteful at best, and shameful grafts most of the time.

  15. Here is the sad part. Let's overlook the totalitarism and lack of accountability. The fact is that these central blocks of Paris truly are great living spaces. So WHY is any zoning code (more tyranny, same tyranny) anywhere in the world different from Haussman's plans? If it is known and shown what works...and governments mandate otherwise and in contradiction of this, it means that they do not prioritize the citizen's life quality.
