Also, collectivists persecute and destroy those that resist or refuse the common identity. Collectives do not allow members to leave, and punish those who try to leave. Societies are voluntary, and individuals are free to join, or leave, as it suits their individual personal interests. There is a difference between a society of willing individuals, and a collective of lumpen proletariats that draw their identity from the country, tribe, futbol team, class, or "gender" (ejem!)

Hollywood became preachy because pushing the "message" became it's goal. Entertainers have crossed over into politics several times and in different places (Ronald Reagan, Pele, Joseph Estrada), and many politicians have crossed over into "stardom" (Clinton). What is new is the full on transformation of politics into entertainment/soap opera . The ideas are not debated, all it matters is the shallow tit-for-tat of tearing the state of the union report, or scoring viral tweets. Shallow, short attention span citizens do not read or dedicate time to dense political platforms. They want to vote like consumers, and bling is the only thing the current voter values. As long as that is the case, they will keep eating hollywood crap as "inspiration" . The republic and it's institutions fail, becuase the citizen is not up to the task.

  97. This is a pretty bad movie. Batman gets played by Falcone AND Alfred, and the plot moves forward (ejem!) on him just believing hearsay from both. The plot is just a series of unearned surprises with no setup, so there is no payoff that engages the audience. Nothing notable in costume, cinematography, or music. The film actually manages to make Andy Serkes do a bad part. The "detective" angle is a poor attempt to mix Sev7n, the Zodiac killer and the recent sherlock holmes movies, the result is a mess. The "message" is alive and well, all bad guys are white men, all good guys are black women. Thumbs down

  103. Watchmen threaded on the visuals, and content source, SinCity (2005) trailblazed. It is not that it was "ahead of it's time", plenty of tragic heroes and anti-heroes have existed. The thing is that large audiences (increasingly) want effortless entertainment. This movie will force anyone to react and to think, and that is a no-no if your thoughts have to come pre-chewed via a narrative. This kind of movies makes people reflect upon themselves, they don't like what they see, and associate that discomfort with the movie.

And how Villeneuve had to walk around them to avoid falling into overused tropes of the copycats . A few examples: Arrakis is Tatoinne. The "chosen one" is Anakin/Neo. "fear is the little death" = after earth "danger is real, fear is a choice", Sardaukars = Stormtroopers, clone armies. Chani = Neitiry/Trinity woman of the "other world". Paul "goes native" = Avatar, Dances with wolves. the Sarlack = the worm. Luke sees the two suns on the horizon, Paul sees the sun on the horizon. Fremen = Freefolk GOT/Avatar/dances with wolves. Emperor = emperor. Does Paul have free will? = does Neo have free will?..... The original DUNE is a carcass that has been recycled so many times by others that it became a trope itself.
