I dislike the term "unfortunate", because most of these issues are pretty much under our control. The outcome may be "unfortunate", but the decisions that led to that outcome are "willful"

in 15:50 "in the back of the captain's mind was ..." If KLM's STAR pilot and trainer for all other pilots cannot identify his own fixation/go fever, If your BEST pilot is thinking about cost and fines instead of flight safety... if your PROPAGANDA pilot kills hundreds of people....KLM should have grounded ALL flight crews. When you "best" won't do, everybody else is just deadly.

@N Fels "cleared flights like that" ... the assumption is that the pilot that had never landed on this alternate airport " knew " that was the way ATC did things, in the middle of an unprecedented emergency... No need to increase awareness, manage risks, recognize that this ATC may be overwhelmed by an invasion of aircraft... far easier just to call the ATC a "moron" and save the company some bucks.

@N Fels If VanZandt believed the ATC was deficient, he could have "shut down" himself. Please stop making a strawman argument. I am not defending the ATC , the ATC could be "dumb" and " shit". But the ATC is not commanding any aircraft . The buck stops with VanZandt. The buck stops with the pilot in command.

@N Fels you contradict yourself, sir. Before you said that "okay" is not an approval. IF "okay" is NOT a proper approval, what pilot would take off if proper approval has not been given? Pilots are not dumb , only ATC is dumb . VanZandt was hasty and focused on something other than flight safety.

"Now with a non-idiotic ATC who follows protocol, that would not have been confusing since you don't grant clearance that way ." --- ATC may be an idiot, but idiots DO NOT grant clearance. Specially "not that way". The pilot must get proper clearance from the "idiot". A pilot cannot decide the ATC is an "idiot" and the follow the idiot's instructions. See the contradiction?

@N Fels and pray, do tell, what was the correct choice? wait "for years", or kill a few hundred people? If protocol is not being followed, then is up to (precisely) the VanZandts to bring it back. Kicking and screaming if it had to be. ATC is never pilot in command.

@N Fels if you are in the middle of a fog, in an alternate airport packed with planes, if you KNOW the ATC is an "idiot", and you KNOW that there is someone taxing behind you... and you gun down the runway without proper clearance... what was VanZandt expecting? A Christmas miracle? It is a very clear and KNOWN choice between wait and kill. There is nothing false about taking off in a runway that is occupied.
