min 25:00 TIK spot on. We may never know, everyone has to make up their own mind. We cannot and should not quarterback from 80 years in the future peoples that were exhausted after five years of war. The lesson here is that we should avoid placing ourselves in positions where we are limited to bad outcomes.

@jonstoddard8288 On the whole, you are correct. Of course some people would argue the semantics, but not me. 👍

@aranos6269 no argument here. Someone should be responsible. And we also should understand why they made these decisions. The objective here is not to punish, but to prevent.

@frederickbays405 You DID understand that this was done because of Stalin's threats? (real or imagined)

@frederickbays405 In hindsight we know Stalin was weak. But keep in mind that all this was agreed for in Yalta. The commitments made in Feb/45 in Yalta contemplated continued and bloody war in the pacific, with Russia as an ally, maybe for two more years. The Trinity test was not until July/45, so it was still unproven pipe dream. Maybe, if Yalta had happened after the the Trinity test, Stalin would have not been able to obtain so much.

@frederickbays405 That is NOT what I said. What I said is that WHEN Yalta took place, they all expected two more years of war, and they needed Stalin to chip in against Japan. So the promises to return the prisioners were made to keep Stalin "happy". Had they already tested the Abomb before Yalta, maybe they would have not promised so much to Stalin

@frederickbays405 As you say, Stalin could kill 30M japanese. Now if the allies wanted Stalin to do this, they had to surrender the POWs to Stalin to keep Russia on their side. --- Imagine for five minutes if Stalin had brokered peace with the japanese in exchange for (whatever)... and had sent the leftover lend-lease equipment and supplies to Japan.

@frederickbays405 no argument here. You are making my point. All the commitments and plans made before the Abomb were changed after it was used. The allies agreed to repatriate the peoples Stalin demanded, because they needed him for an extended war with Japan. Stalin changed his plans to take Manchuria, Korea and China, when he saw what the Abomb could do. /// Also, that Stalin played the allies like a fiddle? Yes, yes and yes. The western allies were unprepared to deal with people like Stalin.
