There are crazy predictions nowadays too, like Ray Kurzweil in his existential anxiety first predicted that we will reach technological singularity and all become immortal by uploading ourselves into computers by 2045, but then claimed it will happen by 2029-2030. Probably, he realised his chances to survive to 2045 were low, hence the update. Yet many believe everything he says, because he is really a smart inventor. As if smart people and experts never made mistakes or never fell into ridiculous beliefs...
