One thing is to put effort into something already tested and known, like how to fight epidemics, or how to develop a vaccine, humanity has been doing it for a long time already. Another thing is an absolutely new technology. Also, I am pretty sure saving human lives is more important and urgent. Yes, imagine old people's lives and lives of people with chronic illness matter as much as yours
