  2. Actually, the first time "America" was used in modern way, it was used on a map by German map-maker. That guy has never been in the Americas and probably has never met with anyone, who has been, so it is most likely he just used some European explorer's name, which he happened to hear somewhere. But the exact origin and reasoning will never be known, actually. But it is very very unlikely that he would ever hear any word of origin from native American languages. Simply because some words sound similar in different languages doesn't mean they have the same origin.
