  8. Planet as a whole is getting poorer, at least in terms of biodiversity. Thanks to us. Which also can suddenly undermine basis of our own civilization quite soon. Yeah, in average we nowadays keep getting 'wealthier', if you ignore that income inequality is rising along with global GDP. Poorest countries and poorest classes in any country didnt get wealthier during last several decades. Poor people even get poorer in many cases. Several economic organisations have recently estimated that less than 100 wealthiest individuals have as much as poorest HALF of global popualtion. "Progress" And even that economic development that actually benefits whole population, comes at the expense of environmental destruction and thus undermines our own future. HEalthier we get because science isnt that full of spoiled greedy people as politics and economics. But politicians and economists rule the world, not scientists. Scientists are helpless in the face of political persecution. In modern USA for example certain climate scientists get threatened because of climate change denying agenda of some political powers.  And problem with humans is, largely, that no matter how better it gets and for how long it gets better, it all can be easily destroyed in one moment by other, or even the same humans. Many examples in history. But no, ignore that and many other facts about our dark side, and continue believing in antropocentric myth that "humans are the best"... Most people, as evident, just ignore facts they dont like, after all. What we need to get better is not blind belief that we are "so good" but full and disappointing realisation that our badness isnt much outweighted by our goodness and only a lot of effort will make us better. Realisation of problems - not denial of them...

  19. Why should I care about people unknown to me? Just because they are members of the same species? That is not a reason for me. I have empathy for most other species of vertebrate and many invertebrate animals too. But progress of humanity also means in many ways death and torture of other animals. And the situation with biodiversity will worsen anyway, if humans grow their numbers and economic activity, no matter how "green" your technology is, it cannot be totally "green". For example, fossil fuels are the worst, but other sources of energy are also not that good: wind turbines cause deaths of many birds, dams on rivers worsen river ecology. And agriculture: we cannot live without it. But any kind of agriculture is bad for wild ecosystems. Any kind, without exception. So, no, I cannot choose between this species and whole other biosphere. Because all living creatures matter. Not only humans. I refuse to view other living creatures only as a resourse for human purposes. I realize that it is impossible to avoid all harm to other creatures, thus I realize that human progress has a huge downside. Maybe for someone else, lives of all those animals and other creatures dont matter. But for me they do. I love nature, I view myself as a part of biosphere, and all living creatures matter for me in one way or another. And I dont want to view humans unknown to me as more valuable than members of other species. In certain cases it is even the opposite: like death of my pet bird was bigger tragedy for me, than death of some people, and not only because of the emotional pain that it caused for me, but I really think that life of a bird is by itself as valuable as human life. Society cannot view it like that, due to practical reasons, but I personally can view it only like that.
