  2. Plenty of church folks in Russia were mafia back in the 90s. Or drug addicts. After the prison or drugs many had nowhere to go, so church was the only one who helped them. I don't particularly like religion or what the church is doing nowadays, but at least they believe even "fallen" people deserve redemption
