Actually many people retained religion during USSR, some not even in secret. My grandmother and mother were born in 1927 and 1952 respectively, and both were baptized soon after birth, and were always believers. Greatgrandmother and grandmother were going to church during some holidays. I was baptized after birth too in 1993, and was a believer until teen years. Only later I became an atheist. You don't even know that Stalin started to ally with Orthodox church during ww2 and later? Many priests spied for KGB

@rabbitrun777 well, that is reality. Nothing is inherently right or wrong on the universal scale. One can either accept it or not, and a truly moral person doesn't need morality to be "universal", he/she won't harm other people anyway

@alltheworldsastage4785 America existed long before Christianity was brought there...

Neoliberal capitalism in general. A lot of irrational beliefs are treated as dogmas, for example paradigm of "endless economic growth", which is just destructive in long term. Or the idea of "trickle down economy". Or the nonsense that billionaires "just worked hard that is why they are rich".

Most Russian orthodox people only say they are, they don't go to churches, and haven't ever opened the Bible. Both in Estonia and here in Russia.

That is the payment for letting hyper-orthodox fanatics reproduce like crazy and live without having to work

It was made on february 29th, 2020. 2021 doesn't have february 29th. So, how?

No, you don't need supernatural, just natural phenomena to explain everything that happens. Sometimes we just don't have enough data to describe all of them in detail. But everything in the universe is related and part of one huge system, thus, natural. "Supernatural" would mean there is another parallel reality, which sometimes interacts with ours, and that is not supported by any evidence. Even mystical or unexplained phenomena are natural and part of this universe, it is just our underdeveloped civilization doesn't yet understand them

@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 many Russian speakers in Baltic states are of Ukrainian or Belarusian ancestry or from any of ethnic groups of Russia, not necessarily ethnic Russian

True, I am an atheist, my mom is Orthodox Christian and my dad is indifferent to religion, it has been like that for a long time, and we all get along well

@henriquegomes9326 compared with Russia, where I live, their suicide rates are very low

@offenseliontv8803 actually no, noone among atheists views Darwin or anyone else like "messiah". That weird kind of attitude towards people is not what most atheists have. We don't "worship" anyone

Capitalism looks like religion too. It certainly has more irrational beliefs you have to accept, like that billionaires "earned all their money themselves" or that "trickle down economy will solve poverty without need for redistribution"

@SH-kz4fl communism doesn't mean "government does stuff" or "government has unrestricted power".

Most "religious" people here in Russia don't go to churches at all. My mom always went one or several times a year. But I, even though I truly believed in Christianity before my teen years, didn't go. Only maybe for tourist destinations.
