Actually "Aztecs" is name given by Spaniards. They called themselves Mexica people, after whom Mexico was later named, and were one of many groups who spoke Nahuatl. They formed Triple Alliance and conquered many other ethnic groups, and those were not very happy with that. When Spanish came, they acquired huge army of local allies: Tlaxcala, whom Triple Alliance never managed to conquer, and many other groups. Only few hundred people were actual Spaniards. At first they were almost killed in Tenochtitlan, and would not survive without their native allies. For native it was more like a huge war between rival local forces with few weird strangers with weird weapons tagging along, I doubt anyone could fathom that Spanish Empire could actually control and rule them, cause there were few of them at that time, and all their actual force was beyond the seas
