  3.  @prybudynkova  what do you mean? They are not destroyed. They exist nowadays. Who exactly destroyed them? How? Name the exact events. They just have been gradually assimilating for generations into Russian ethnicity, like all European-looking Orthodox Christian ethnic groups in Russia have been, because that is what happens when you get universal education, urbanisation, centralisation etc. People start to move to cities and other regions and there they assimilate into dominant ethnicity. Plus poverty, when people are poor they don't think about preserving their language and culture, they think only about surviving. And that affects all people in Russia, including ethnic Russians. Do you think we haven't lost most knowledge of our traditions? We did. Villages are emptying and only old people and addicts are left

  5. Karelians were part of Novgorod since 12-13 century. Then Sweden invaded Karelian Isthmus and separated Karelians in two. Two states, two religions, etc That is where their troubles come from. Because they were separated. Karelian history is much more complex than most people realize

  7.  @prybudynkova  I was talking about Karelian ethnicity. But yeah, Novgorod and other cities were conquered in a brutal way, but they were all Slavs, the ancestors of ethnic Russians. There is no group "muscovites" nowadays. As soon as Moscow conquered all those other cities, all Russian-speaking Orthodox people were seen as just Russian. I have ancestry from both Novgorod region and several regions around Moscow, for example. And most Russians have ancestry from just everywhere.

  9.  @thepickle5214  which ones? Name one ethnicity which "doesn't exist anymore"? I live in Saint Petersburg, and even very small ethnic groups like Vod and Izhora still exist. They have very low numbers, but they do have organisations, teach and revive languages, etc. Majority of them assimilated due to urbanisation and universal use of Russian language in the past. Saying they "don't exist anymore" first of all would be disrespectful to them.

USSR was the first to give autonomy to many ethnic minorities and make their languages official, then Stalin came and reversed that policy and even deported whole ethnicities. Because he was actually a reactionary imperialist
