How much cost of living could be reduced just by having universal healthcare for everyone? And education? Think about it.
I am not from America, and my family, if you look at monthly income, was always much much poorer, than most poor Americans. Yet we have never been in debt ever, even when my mom had a heart attack at 54, when I was 13 and my dad was the only one working for certain amount of time. Even despite the fact that I got my first real job at 25 (I have been studying already for a decade and couldn't study and work at the same time before I got a master's degree), and before that I had only miserable stipend and lived almost entirely on my parents' money. In fact, my mom was able to save for years and bought an almost new car two years ago, and still has more than half of her savings intact. All because free healthcare and education at university. Only thing I pay for here is a dormitory, and it costs 5$ a month, while my current stipend as a PhD student is 20 times bigger.
Of course, life here is far from being super great, but at least we have never been in debt
