  1. of those 2 options if by "communism" you mean Soviet Union-type regime, I would choose it, I am from Russia, and when parents and other older people tell me about life in USSR - I realise that there were a lot of problems, more than nowadays, but it wasnt terribly bad. If you consider time after Stalin was already dead, it was absolutely possible to lead normal lives, and in some ways poor people had even more advantages than now. in fact, in the choice between post-Stalin USSR and pre-revolution Russian Empire, I would still choose USSR. At least its bureaucratic hierarchy wasnt as unfair as hereditary hierarchy in Empire, and USSR also had decent education and medicine, unlike RE

  2. I would also add that Westerners seem to think that USSR was oh-so terrible, because cold war propaganda is still not dead. really, it was very different during different parts of Soviet era. what was during Stalin's repressions and what was after Stalin's death was very different
