You can always trust your intelligence, and evidenced-based research.

@deborahwyndham-lewis5188 OK let's not use "common sense", let's use critical thinking. Do you understand the difference between weather (short-term atmospheric conditions) and climate (long-term trends and patterns) o ? How do you respond to the argument that individual weather events (like a cold winter) do not disprove global climate trends ?
4
As a matter of balance: Can you provide at least one example of where a scientific prediction has been accurate and beneficial in the past? What evidence would you need to see to change your stance on trusting scientific research?
3
Where do you get most of your information about climate change?
2
Should we not address the "skepticism" of Talk TV's news agenda? After all the Murdock's media company News Corp has links to the fossil fuel industry. Its stance on climate change and the dissemination of content often downplays the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. This broader context suggests a possible alignment of interests between the media company's editorial policies and the fossil fuel sector's agendas.

Who here thinks climate and weather are the same?

@deborahwyndham-lewis5188 Why do you think some people are not expressing anger about these actions? What sources of information have shaped your views on the establishment's actions? How do you assess the reliability of these sources?
1
@deborahwyndham-lewis5188 How reliable, credible, and trustworthy do you consider your family to be as a source of information on climate change?

@paulwhite6745 Have you done your research? Have you gone to the Met Office website and checked the data? Have you compared your part of the country to the rest of the UK? Or have you just listened to numpties telling you that it is all part of an agenda?

@glerp10000000000 Examples.

@glerp10000000000 Weather or climate? It helps to give examples. Climate predictions can be complex and subject to uncertainties, but the overall trend of rising temperatures and increased extreme weather events is well-documented by scientific evidence. As for weather, although individual weather events can be unpredictable, the long-term data shows a clear trend of rising temperatures and more extreme weather patterns, supporting the reality of climate change.

@StuartwasDrinkell Science isn't about trust; it's about evidence. The Met Office and countless researchers worldwide follow rigorous methods and data to understand climate change. Denying their findings is like ignoring a fire alarm because you don't trust the brand. Ignoring the signs won't stop the crisis.

@JohnKobaRuddy What are you on about? When I know what you mean then I can answer. But surely the more apt questions is: How do you respond to the argument that individual weather events (like a cold winter) do not disprove global climate trends ?

@alanjm1234 For it to be the hottest May on record, which time do you compare the month of May to? The previous May? The one previous to that? The ones stretching back to when records began in 1884? May 2024 was the warmest May on record, with a provisional average mean temperature of 13.1°C, surpassing the previous record of 12.1°C set in 2008. This record is part of a series that dates back to 1884. Northern parts of the country was warmer. In May 2024, the north experienced higher than usual temperatures and significant rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month, leading to record-breaking wet days. The south also saw high temperatures but with less extreme rainfall compared to the north. Both regions had below-average sunshine hours, contributing to a generally dull month. Is it not appropriate then to ask the question regarding the difference between weather and climate?
1
@mattylamb9194 When we say "the month of May is the warmest since records began," we are noting an immediate, short-term occurrence. However, this observation gains importance and meaning when contextualized within the long-term record of historical temperature data. CONTEXT. Is that so difficult to understand? Not to those here saying "Ooo, I had my winter coat on" and you right-wingers shilling for multinational fossil fuel companies without any financial reward.
1
@mattylamb9194 How can short-term weather records, like the warmest month on record, be used to support long-term climate change conclusions without falling into the trap of cherry-picking data? In what ways can understanding the distinction between weather and climate improve public perception and policy-making regarding climate change?

🌍💔 It's disheartening to see how some folks still lack an understanding of nature and the climate. Viewing nature as expendable and falling for right-wing grifters' manipulation is dangerous. Why are you shilling for multinational fossil fuel companies without any financial reward? The science of climate change is clear, yet some refuse to learn or engage in critical thinking. They can't provide reasonable evidence to claim climate change is entirely natural rather than anthropogenic. Let's wake up and protect our planet!
