  169.  @garybaris139  I literally live and have grown up on the outskirts of Kibera, the biggest slum in Africa and I can tell you for a fact, that I've seen firsthand what improved education, infrastructure such as roads, access to credit, affordable healthcare and welfare can do to raise people's standards of living...but only so much is possible in a country as corrupt as ours where the richest family, of which our current president belongs in, owns almost if not more than a quarter, even possibly a half of all arable land in the country, I'm saying half now bc of declining fertility and climate change... But these are people in the urban areas, there's work and markets here...go to the rural sides however... Where 12 year old kids and above carry guns to protect their livestock from cattle rustlers and the kids fortunate enough to go to school have to be escorted by the army due to fear of tribal retaliatory attacks...these guys are poor not by choice... And also the whole "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" argument has been received well and my generation has come to the conclusion you have to make it in life by all means necessary, killing, stealing bc that's exactly how most of the rich in my country got rich, if they inherited their wealth then that's how their fathers and grandfathers got rich... literally everyday there's a corruption scandal in the news... In fact this is so much the fact that the Islamic radicalists are capitalizing on this, because this has been accepted as reality, the probability of you living a good life by honest means is extremely low, so why not get your hands dirty or bloody and try your luck... So is poverty a choice here?
