@eeeaten The problem IS capitalism. Infinite growth is impossible in a finite planet. 2nd law of thermodynamics.
7
@eeeaten Yes all countries except for Cuba and North Korea are mixed economies. By capitalism I mean a system of free-market economics that demands prioritization of short-term profits in other words growth at all costs above all else. Yes it is not wrong to say that capitalism has lifted billions out of poverty but now with something as existential as climate change there is a greater need to prioritize the well-being of our future selves than short-term profits. Because what good are profits when civilization collapses. Which literally 90% of all the papers I've read say will happen mid-century
6
Yeah that's never happening. It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism

@constantinethecataphract5949 "backwards and poor" You do know you guys industrialized before us bc life in the West was so harsh that you had to adapt and innovate right? If Africans needed to, we would have innovated at a level the West achieved, we were just comfortable in our mud/grass/dung huts...
4
Joke's on you, I ain't having kids
4
Well then going by that logic, since Africa is the cradle of mankind...
3
This is just a few steps shy of hopium. "Mitigate most of the bad things"???? Laughs in the latest IPCC report and climate change feedback loops. And then the guy goes ahead and talks about Carbon capture and storage 😂😂 A technology that would probably only viably work in a hollywood sci-fi movie... The only hope is growing a conscience and not having kids to spare them from the difficulties that await the individuals of this planet in the future and enjoy your life while you still can before it reaches a period where you can't.
3
It's the other way around more poverty, more people less poverty, less people
3
FFS, multiple research shows as living conditions improve, people have less children as having many children is perceived as a liability instead of an asset... Poor people have lots of children because it increases their chances that some survive, it provides labour for the farms or financial security should some luckily land jobs and is also a retirement plan as the children will take care of you when you're old...
3
The problem isn't that there aren't any solutions, the problem is that humans are a bunch of greedy little shits...
3
It's really unfair, Africa contributes peanuts to the carbon crisis and yet it will be the continent most affected by climate change
3
If they manage to come to Earth we don't stand a single chance
2
As an East African....can confirm...
2
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 the system goes brrrr
2
Fuck religion man
2
The planet isn't dying, Earth will be fine, it's ecosystems tho, won't be
2
No no no...let them keep it and invest in Africa instead cuz the minute the govts in Africa get a hand on that cash, it will all disappear... I honestly do not trust us with money, we are shit with it
2
Yup
2
The comments here are mad🔥🔥
2
Ever heard of the quantity/quality trade-off?
2
Remember the thing about climate change, how the weather is becoming more unpredictable and unreliable, how that will make food difficult to grow and life more uncomfortable, how fresh water is becoming more and more scarce, and how people tend to kill each other when resources are scarce? Yeah.... that
2
@VOTVRe we have water, large aquefiers actually underground, we just have shit management...
2
You think the leaders and industry leaders care?
1
😂😂😂
1
As an African I can confidently tell you econ. growth is stifled cuz of collective stupidity... My generation is the most educated yet the people we put in govt. are f*cking clowns, we know that they'll screw us over and we let them... To some extent we deserve this
1
😂
1
It's human nature to look for reasons to kill each other...
1
Exactly! 30 years from now they'll still be saying there is hope and all that hopium BS...
1
@Nocturn Adrift well it depends, for the colonialists? Yeah! Very much... for the colonised whose lands were grabbed, driven out of their ancestral land, livelihoods disrupted and destroyed, subjection to harsh taxes and the often ignored concentration camps... not so much
1
@troywalt4834 they were fine with that...if they weren't they would have industrialized in a different fashion like the West did don't you think?
1
@Habs1967 brain drain yeah, but it's a good source of foreign exchange... just ask Nigeria
1
I have this meme, sad taht you can't share pics on YT
1
Haha we're fucked...
1
One book that covers this properly is that one by Hans Rosling... forgotten the name, y'all should check it out
1
THE HYPOCRISY 😂😂😂
1
Yeah, no... That asteroid needs to make a sequel very very soon
1
Yeah, in fact, nuclear weapons are essential for peace... America would never dare invade North Korea or Russia or China
1
Won't and never will happen
1
Not having kids either
1
Exactly...
1
Bold of you to assume they"ll even know what it is or even understand English...or even care. They could hate us like in SEE
1
RIGHT?
1
No difference whatsoever. The amount the IPCC says is needed is in the trillions of dollars
1
You mean the same China that turned a desert into a forest?
1
@tinicruz7004 that tech is nothing but science fiction and the fact that most are being run by fossil fuel companies should tell you all you need to know...
1
No it's human stupidity...
1
Expensive, EROI is low ASF and takes forever to build
1
You're not, we're fucked
1
@kieferkarpfen6897 seriously?😂😂😂 The only solution to our current predicament is for people to consume less and yet in America.... I don't need to mention anything, the Chinese middle class wants to consume like the average American, more and more forest is being cut down to grow animal feed and here in Africa we're set to double our no.s by 2050 and triple it by 2100....
1
@kieferkarpfen6897 bruh that'll take decades, time which we do not have... The only solutions are the radical ones but no one's willing to make that sacrifice ergo... we're fucked
