One of the biggest reasons is that Germans are loyal to buying German goods, and value quality built items. US shoppers only look for the cheapest product, regardless where it's made.

Blame 1) one-child policy that should've lasted 10 years vs 30 years. That wiped out basically two generations, and established having fewer kids as the norm. 2) driving people from the countryside into large cities. There's no room to have a kids, and it's more expensive: 3) the largely unspoken event is the growth and use of social media. Social media does not encourage families, but rather the single life, spending in excess, and massive entitlement in mostly female audiences. It creates an unrealistic expectation of what a partner should be, and what success looks like (1.8 meter tall, 1M yuan per year, and paid off house/car).
