The problem is that consumer are the ones that keep buying more and more expensive cars. If people won't pay more than $25K for a car... car makers would be making and selling cars for $20K-$25K. But as long as buyers keep paying $50K, $75K, or $90K for a car/truck... of course auto makers are more than happy to accomodate.

It just comes down to demand. There's a reason why car mfg stopped making sub-compacts, compacts, and sedans... because they don't sell. And the ones that actually make a decent compact (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla) sell for nearly mid-size car prices (Accord, Camry). The alt option is to buy a disposable Korean car.

@Marianbiznesu Europe also has IMO, a different buy domestic behavior which is much different in America. Aside from high import taxes, German people want German cars, and not Japanese cars. French want French or EU cars, and not American or Japanese... let alone Korean cars. In addition, the roads and cities in Europe are more adapt for smaller cars for non-commercial areas (lanes are smaller, parking is already a nightmare)... you don't see a large diesel truck as a everyday driver for for someone living in center city, etc.

@Marianbiznesu Typical car mileage in the US is 12K miles per year... this is inline with car insurance ratings, and also new car mfg warranties of 3yrs or 36K miles. The US is huge, and there's lot of space, so it's easier to build wider roads up front vs trying to make room in a 500+ year old street. There are actually very few v6 and v8 consumer cars sold because of EPA requirements around MPG for car makers. Most cars are 4cyl or 4cyl with turbo these days... only trucks, higher end luxury, sports car have v6, and almost all v8 are big trucks these days.
