The first person is obviously incompetent. If one is thinking they are going to get a promotion and raise... instead, getting a 90% pay cut. If one is a top performer, a company will not fire them since they are a valuable asset (even if they are shutting down a division, they will find a spot for you in another team). This person is obviously not a good performer, and their subordinate performed better than her (which she admitted). If her subordinate is performing excellent, that should mean she needs to perform better (but she didn't). Also, working overtime does not mean you are actually doing good work. Many poor performers need to work overtime because their work is sub-par, and need extra time just to make it adequate.

If a company can fire you on the spot, and have you leave basically immediately, that means you have little value in the company because your work is not mission critical, and can be easily replaced. People need to build a job/career that makes them difficult to be replaced... either taking a job that is very difficult, or extremely complicated that someone without special skills cannot do. Otherwise, if you have a generic job... of course a company would rather find someone to pay less, and get the same quality of work.

For the garment worker who worked through the Holiday, and then took a day off, and got fired the next day. My question to her is that, did she ask for the day off in advance... or just decided not to show up and not tell her boss? Also, what was your past work history, and taking days off?

@GrandHeresiarch We hear tales of woe... but when it's an employee who is just one of hundreds, if not thousands doing the exact same thing... and they are "selected" for for something, there must be a reason. It may be a good reason, or it may be a bad or unfair reason... but there is a reason.
