Plus that with America's general attitude towards karate at the time (represented by Kreese and Cobra Kai), it's highly unlikely they would go to Okinawa to learn martial arts as opposed to military training

It feels like a rehash of the original movie, Daniel is highly unlikeable, the tournament sequence is highly rushed, the fighting scenes are dull, and neither the bonsai shop subplot nor the romantic subplot with Jessica go anywhere. Mike also doesn't have much personality other than being angry all the time

Chozen is established as a cheater who always looked for shortcuts, as well as probably putting all his attention on the brutal aspects, so he most likely didn't even pay attention when Sato tried to teach him the more meditative side. Therefore, he thinks Daniel is too weak to succeed Sato on the other hand gives a subtle look that practically says "Oh, he knows that breathing technique. I'm gonna lose that bet!"
