Here's the difference: - Critics: looking at how the movie handles its elements, formal qualities, and aspects for its specific type of movie - Audience: only basing judgement on their personal preferences in a too subjective way, so if they for example personally hate drama films, they hate on all drama films even if one of them fulfills every criteria for a drama film to perfection

With audience "reviews" however, 90 % of them are just "This movie is so fucking awful", "This movie sucks ass", "This piece of shit was so fucking boring"; there's too much on personal preference instead of assessments, and there’s almost no analysis There's a reason why I almost never read them and just go by my own aesthetic judgements instead

  5. Elías MG​​ I don't trust Rotten Tomatoes entirely. I see if a movie has received a "fresh" rating, and then I watch the movie myself and see if I agree; the higher rating, the more I'm likely to not get disappointed since I think more like a critic than an average audience member and a really high rating is close to be near-universally acclaimed. (Of course, I have been disappointed or thought that a movie is underrated). However, I rarely watch their lists for top movies of the year Another reason I like Rotten Tomatoes is because it follows the "joint verdict" principle, where several film critics share their judgement and the website finds out what aspects of the movie that was generally praised or criticized (therefore the consensus you see below the Rotten Tomatoes score). With that principle, I'm prepared for the movie, and I think it's more reliable than just reading a bunch of audience reviews where the majority of the writers confuse aesthetic judgement with personal preferences. At the end of the day however, I generally watch and praise movies that are considered to be among the best by many different sources, not just RT. For example, you don't have to go to RT to know that "The Godfather" is considered to be one of the best movies of all time

  6. Elías MG​​ Maybe not, but it's a good place to look at first. Like I said, if a bunch of critics specialized in argumentation and aesthetic judgement generally praise/criticize a movie for those and those reasons, then their consensus is more likely to become a norm and something the average audience will praise/criticize the movie for too. Also, The "top critics" generally have a special qualification that makes them close to being "true judges"
