+Raptor King I've never thought that it even sounds happy and patriotic; his voice is relatively aggressive, and the song itself is quite intense and dramatic

+Reda Noaimy Because older songs had some actual depth unlike modern music
8
+Gabriel Valenzuela It's an allegory of a little boy growing up and therefore letting go of his childhood fantasies (The dragon)
4
+Harvey Kojan Yes, the only "deeper meaning" is that the song is an allegory of growing up
4
+Mark Mason People just look into every minor detail to find something to get offended by, or they come up with "dark interpretations" (often out of thin air) for the same purpose
3
Don't worry, it IS about growing up and to stop believing in your beautiful imaginary dragon. People misinterpret the song as being about drugs just because of "Puff"
2
+Sherana Loss of innocence and letting go of your childhood fantasies, NOT drugs!
2
"Like Toy Soldiers" by Eminem Everybody thinks that it's about Proof getting shot despite him being alive when the song was made
1
People just hear the word "puff" and automatically think it's about drugs. I find that really ridiculous though. Then again, English is not my first language, and I originally heard a translated version and thought "Puff" was just a cute name when I was little
1
Which song?
1
Yeah, which song? There are multiple song on that album
1
Depends on the song
1
+Dan Man Most people should still understand the theme though. Just because it was written for a specific person doesn't mean that people cannot interpret it as something universal
1
LOL, I have always had the association of broken love when I've heard it, and I was not very old when I started listening to it for real
1
+Candice Sherlocked Hozier said that he made the song because he was provoked by the church's intolerance towards gay couples though
1
+traviswall1982 I would also say "Born in the USA" has a clear lyrics too; he directly mentions Vietnam and its horrors, and he sings in a very aggressive way
1
+jorch1220 There are interpretations that are really stupid though, or they put in events that occurred AFTER the song was made. Some of my favorites: - "Like Toy Soldiers' by Eminen is about Proof dying" (No, because Proof died 2 years AFTER the song was made!) - "Puff the Magic Dragon' is about taking drugs" (No, the term "puff" wasn't around in the late 50's, and the trio has confirmed that drugs was very rarely a thing at that point) - "Born in the USA' is patriotic and glamorizing 'Murica!!!" (Oh yeah, because that aggressive voice and Vietnam War references are definitely patriotic) - "Bohemian Rhapsody' is about Freddie having AIDS" (No, he didn't have AIDS until late 80's)
1
It's not about drugs, it's about growing up and forgetting about your childhood imaginary friends and fantasies
1
Lol, just because of "puff"? Nah, it's about children growing up and forgetting about their childhood fantasies and imaginary friends
1
"Wish You Were Here" is actually more about alienation and how the music industry makes you think you've lost yourself
1
People who have listened to the entire album or even seen the movie should know that it's definitely not about heroin
1
+Harley Kelly Its meaning is very ambigious though; some think it's about drugs, some think it's about satanism, and some think it's straightforward
1
***** No, that's the misconception WatchMojo touched upon
1
Based on the context and theme of the rest of the album, I've had an interpretation that the person you're missing is yourself when things around you made sense and you knew who you were
1
+joey1979 I meant the title song. I know "Shine on You Crazy Dismond" was about Syd
1
Some lyrics often has a clear intention and meaning though

Harvey Mack "As the principal writer of the song, I can assure you it's a song about innocence lost. It's easier to interpret 'The Star-Spangled Banner' as a drug song than 'Puff, the Magic Dragon.' This is just a funny rumor that was promulgated by Newsweek magazine [who ran a cover story about covert drug messages in pop music]. There is no basis for it. It's inane at this point and really unfortunate, because even in Hong Kong it's not played because of the allegation it's about drugs. But I assure you it's not. When 'Puff' was written, I was too innocent to know about drugs. What kind of a meanspirited SOB would write a children's song with a covert drug message?"
1
ali Servan I quoted the writer
1
I think it's so stupid that people think it's about drugs just because of the "Puff" part. But again, I only listened to a translated version when I was a kid
1
Depends on how reasonable the interpretation is
1
Misconception: "I will always love you and never let go!" Actual meaning: "I will always love you even though we won't be together anymore"
1
People think it's about drug addiction because of the "puff" part (for reference, I've never thought that since I first heard the Norwegian version, and "puff" has no reference to drugs at all in our language)
1
And there's also something called "intersubjectivity" and "general consensus". If I told you that "Of Grammatology" was about stuffed animals, then it wouldn't be a very substantiated assessment. If I said that "Like Toy Soldiers" (Eminem) was about Proof dying, then I'd be wrong since Proof was alive and well when the same came out. "Everything is subjective" is just a dumb get-out-of-jail free card to dismiss argumentation and rhetorics
1
Alrighty, then MY interpretation of "We Are The World" is that it's actually about killing everyone who isn't white and straight, and you can't argue against it now that you've stated that people can interpret songs however they want
1
Libtard detected
1
+Vicki RN97 McLachlan*, and the "You're in the arms of an angel" part should give a clue that it's a tribute to a deceased person
1
+Lecx Xcel What a lazy slacker
1
+Colby McMichael And to everyone confused about "Puff the Magic Dragon": - Misconception: Drug addiction - Real meaning: Loss of innocence and childhood fantasies
1
+Garnet Lamarche NO!!!!!!! That's the misconception the honorable mention was referring to, and the band themselves have several times denied that their song is about drugs. Even if you take the lyrics by themselves, it's clearly about loss of innocence and letting go off your fantasy creatures
1
There are a lot of unreasonable interpretations though. Some examples: - People think "Born in the USA" is patriotic when Springsteen's tone is clearly aggressive and he mentions the Vietnam War multiple times - People think "Bohemian Rhapsody" is about Freddie Mercury having AIDS when he wasn't diagnosed until the late 80's and he denied that he was sick until it reached its worse point - People think "Like Toy soldiers" is about Proof's death when he didn't die until 16 months after the song and music video were released - People thinking "Puff the Magic Dragon" is about drug addiction when drugs weren't a common thing to sing about when the song was released, as well as the lines "A dragon lives forever But not so, little boys Painted wings and giants's rings Make way for other toys" clearly referencing the loss of childhood innocence - People thinking "Comfortably Numb" is about drug addiction when it's clear in the narrative of "The Wall" that the protagonist has passed out due to childhood trauma and a doctor injects him that one time to continue with his duties as a musician
1
+RADDeathTRAP A bunch of interpretations are stupid though and actually consist of factual errors. Let's take Eminem's song "Like Toy Soldiers": - A bunch of people: "This song is about the death of his best friend Proof" - Me: "Proof died in 2006, this song is from 2004!"
1
+RADDeathTRAP Don't be dumb! I know that! My point was that a bunch of people think it's about Proof when it's clearly not, and that's a stupid song interpretation
1
+Jake Seale You have to be trolling
1
+Rebecca W I go by "death of the author" when it comes to art
1
+Hannah Shribman-Brown Puff the Magic Dragon is NOT about drugs, and the trio has several times stated so. It's about growing up and the loss of innocence, as well as letting go off your imaginary friends (in this case a dragon named Puff).
1
+ktadema The singers have confirmed that it's not about drugs
1
Sure, but even Kant who openly claimed that also said that the person needs to look at things that are actually present in the object itself, and that the judgment needs to make logical sense
1
Oh yeah, the whole liberal thought process of everything being valuable and everything being allowed. It's all a tribute to Barthes and Foucault! Let's try it out: - "Like Toy Soldiers" is about Proof's death. Whoopsie! Proof was still alive when the song was released. - "Bohemian Rhapsody" is about Freddie Mercury having AIDS. Double whoopsie! The song is from 1975 when HIV/AIDS was still rather unknown, and he also wasn't diagnosed until the late 80's and denied it until the disease was at its most critical point. - "The Fletcher Memorial Home" is an optimistic and joyful tribute to the world leaders who have gathered in a cozy house. Whoopsie number threesie! Roger Waters directly calls world leaders "overgrown infants" and "incurable tyrants" and says that they should be locked up and forgotten considering how dark the world has become because of them.

@rudithedog7534 You can save that preach for the church. God is dead!
1
@rudithedog7534 It's nice that you have some insight in how delusional you are
1
+Himalaya Singh You can't just mention the band; you must also a mention a song
1
A lot of interpretations can be stupid and ignorant though
1
+Underground Warrior Nope, it's been denied by the trio multiple times
