  2. "Trying too hard" basically means that the director might as well step in front of the camera and yell "Hey, look! Did you see how moving that scene was? Wow, that scene was so incredibly moving indeed". Oscar-baits also often try too hard since they put in the "ingredients" that are quite popular with critics, but they never do anything effective about them.
