Yes, their subtext are quite different: - Whitney basically says "We will always be together because I just can't let you go!" - Dolly Parton is more like "I know we will be apart soon, but my memories and love for you will live on" (which seems to be intention behind the lyrics)

+Lilliath I didn't even know there was a cover until people started commenting here

+Duytrucvu Vu Why is that so surprising?

John Cale sings in the movie. Leonard Cohen's original version also has a slightly different lyrics, and it's more close to speaking the song
2
LOL
2
It's sampled/remixed in "Like Toy Soldiers", not covered by him
2
Dolly Parton has the most fitting subtext, but most people probably prefer Whitney Houston because of her advanced and powerful vocal performance. I don't know which one I prefer
2
Dolly's subtext fits the context better though
2
+Nikulas Ymir It samples the Aerosmith song in the chorus, but the verses are definitely by Eminem
1
+theNecksLevel Yes, in order to do a cover, you need to get the rights, and that costs quite a lot of money. Just featuring famous songs in movies, theatre plays, or TV shows is also expensive
1
At least they turned out to be wrong
1
It's Eminem (Slim Shady is his alter-ego, and he was not even playing him in the song), and he only sampled Martika's song in the chorus, not covered it
1
They only have the same title; the lyrics and melody are completely different
1
LOL, I knew it was a Irish folk song long before I had even heard about Metallica
1
+Lauren Hayes I wouldn't say that she ruined it, but the subtext kinda disappeared
1
+2011armyvet No, no. "Hurt" was released as a single in 1995
1
Not all rap songs are shitty
1
Tupac samples the song, he is not covering it
1
If you're thinking about Eminem, then he only samples the Aerosmith song in the chorus. The verses are written by him
1
"Living next door to Alice" Smokie Originally by New World
1
I have only heard Terry Jack's version on the radio. Plus, it's actually a French song originally
1
"Video Killed the Radio Star is a song written by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Wooley in 1978" "They [The Buggles] all wrote 'Video Killed the Radio Star' in an hour of one afternoon in 1978"
1
Who doesn't know that?
1
Vanilla Ice only samples the background music; he doesn't cover the song
1
No
1
Adam Castro Song: anything that consists of lyrics, vocals, instruments etc. Cover: An artist releases his/her own version of a song that has already been written, composed, and released by another artist
1
+eveny119 I first heard "Whiskey in the jar" in elementary school when I learnt about Ireland in English class. I was actually a bit surprised back then that a heavy metal band had made a cover of it
1
You mean Nine Inch Nails
1
Nope, it's the other way around
1
Hahahaha, very funny
1
I just heard "I Will Always Love You" in a music video once at a lecture and searched the song up, and naturally the results said that it was made by Dolly Parton
1
Gilpow I'm European too and have still heard about Dolly Parton
1
Good joke
1
In some cases, it's because the originals had great potentials and maybe a great lyrics, but lacked something, the new artist noticed that, and then he/she gave the original just what it needed
1
Then they're sampling, not covering
1
Paul Volkmann A cover means performing an already existing song, including lyrics and (most of the time) melody Using an already existing melody and adding lyrics to the verses to create a new song is sampling. The same goes when using an already existing song as the chorus, but the verses are written by the new artist
1
Sugar Daddy Hey, I understand what you mean
1
Bobby McFerrin made the song, and there is no cover by Bob Marley (the latter had even passed away long before the song was released)
1
+Onyx Fang I have also done that
1
Did you just refer to a country legend like Dolly Parton as just "the other woman"?
1
+Ronald Le LOL, I knew about Busted long before I even came across Jonas Brothers
1
+Billy McNeill Yeah, it surprised me as well
1
+Goncharnik Nosok It only contains a sample of You Spin Me Round; it's not a cover
