you mean like most IMDB reviewers?

there is one that was uploaded 5 years ago

Let me get this straight; you don't like old movies because they are in black-and-white? Sounds like a movie equivalence of discrimination to me, and the term "graphics" don't apply to movies. also, even though art direction and aesthetics play a huge part, so does content; there are many movies I have seen that are in black-and-white and somewhat dated art direction, but still have had better stories and moved me more than modern movies
1
longliverocknroll5 Come on, disliking a movie because it is in black-and-white? What is the logic in that?
1
longliverocknroll5 It just sounds very superficial
1
longliverocknroll5 That's why we have art philosophy and standard of taste, as well as ideal movie critics, to not make judgements superficial and relativistic
1
longliverocknroll5 I said IDEAL movie critics
1
longliverocknroll5 Yes, because there are only a select few who have the authority to give valid aesthetic judgements. Anyone can write reviews and call themselves "movie critics", but very few of them have the skills and qualities to write reviews that can be taken seriously. The rest would not have good enough taste and we have the right to ignore them. The 5 main requirements (according to David Hume) are: - Have a refined taste and be able to sense the aesthetic and formal qualities in a piece of art - Have a lot of experience and training in the field - Being able to make comparisons - Be free of prejudice and influence from other people's taste - Being able to use common sense and know what he/she is actually judging and knowing the critierias for that specific aesthetic object The only movie critic I think of that is close to being ideal is Roger Ebert
1
longliverocknroll5 And some people have clearly better taste than others, and Ebert's reviews are a lot more reliable and close to being objective than almost any review I have read at IMDB for example. And you mostly review a movie to see how it hits the target audience or handle its formal qualities, not because of personal preferences. A critic can enjoy a Stephen King novel and still give it bad aesthetic judgements My main point is that only liking/disliking a movie because they are either in color or black-and-white is a weird way of looking at it: 1. It's only one aspect and formal quality of an entire film 2. It is very trivial I would have respected an opinion or at least taken it more seriously if there were more reasonable and relevant arguments for why he/she thinks that way. Not to mention if more aspects were looked at
1
longliverocknroll5 David Hume and Immanuel Kant would disagree. And there is a difference between enjoying something and give aesthetic judgements; when you review papers for example, you see how the student fills the criterias, you don't look at how you enjoy reading it. Same with movie reviews. If everything is relative, then I guess there must be no good or bad movies in the world at all, because everything would only be good/bad in comparison of the subject's (or culture's) standards. But we still have disagreements and claim that another person has bad taste, which implies that a standard of taste does exist
1
longliverocknroll5 Yes, taste is subjective, but you made it seem like standards and aesthetic qualities in general do not exist at all, which Hume would disagree on. And there is no denial that someone writes better reviews or give more reasonable statements than others I can assure you that there is a big difference on people's attitude and aesthetic experiences when they are watching a movie because they are supposed to review it, and when they are watching it for fun
1
longliverocknroll5 Hume also thought taste and aesthetics are subjective, and he highly disagreed with objectivism (I guess I didn't word it right). But he also thought there were only a select few with subjective aesthetic experiences and "taste" that could give judgements that would be considered acceptable and reasonable.
1
longliverocknroll5 Yes. I have been trying to say the same, but I didn't word it right because I probably can get impulsive in discussions. Are we in an agreement now?
1
it has received good ratings now in retrospective reviews, but it was a flop back then
