I don't have much to add on Witherspoon, but I wouldn't say that Hoffman's win for "Capote" was weak; both he and Phoenix played real-life people, and I highly appreciate Phoenix' singing, but Hoffman just had that little extra by really nailing Capote's mannerism, voice, and accent to every last detail, while Phoenix really had anything except that he felt and looked a bit too like himself
