Overdramatic? He (along with Marlon Brando) was one of the first actors who was able to create a realism and spontaneity in their acting, and his performance in "Rebel Without A Cause" was very influential and revolutionizing for the American youth. If you watch the scene where he's confronting his parents about going to the police (where he says "Mom, I just...once I want to do something right!"), you may notice that Jim Stark's reactions and emotions are something James Dean is really feeling, it's not just because it's in the script. I think he also improvised a lot during the movie, which definitely was not very common at that time

The 60's? His career went downhill in that decade. If Francis Ford Coppola had not casted him in "The Godfather" in 1972, he definitely would have been forgotten But he certainly defined the 50's

The 60's was a horrible decade for him; several of the movies were box-office disappointments, and he wouldn't cooperate with the directors nor his fellow actors. Soon, nobody wanted to touch him until Francis Ford Coppola casted him as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" in 1972

His performances were among the most influential of all time when it comes to realism, naturalism, and spontaneity. He was definitely in the same league as Marlon Brando
