The Twilight Zone accident was indeed shocking and tragic, but "Apocalypse Now" is my first association when I hear the word "production nightmare". They even made a documentary about it called "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse". I would also have added (or mentioned) "Heaven's Gate" since it also ruined Michael Cimino's career and reputation in addition of what happened on the set. And I don't know if it fits in the "production nightmare" category, but I've had the impression that "Schindler's List" was a very disturbing and unpleasant experience for both Spielberg and the cast and crew

DJKrossphire, Da Choppah Kid Director Michael Cimino shot nearly 220 hours of footage because he was never satisfied (I think he shot some of the scenes 15 or 50 times, and those scenes were not even that important), torn down sets for no reason, hired and fired several crew members weekly, and the movie went over budget immediately. The editing was a huge mess, the movie spawned controversy for the animal cruelty on set, and the studio almost went bankrupt.

+Gegë Nagavci He had an philosophy on acting that not knowing lines creates an illusion of realism and genuineness, and he often tried to be spontaneous and improvise

Brando*

Francis Ford Coppola originally wanted Elia Kazan to direct "The Godfather", because he seemed to be the only director who could handle Brando, so that says a lot. However, Brando threatened to quit if Kazan would direct, so Coppola did the directing job himself, and Brando was actually cooperative there, but obviously not during the production of "Apocalypse Now"

Sorry, I meant that the studio wanted to replace Coppola with Kazan

Nicolas Cage used to be a great actor, or at least chose much better movies

You obviously need to read more about him; he was actually very humble and rarely satisfied with his own performances

Good riddance?! You don't even know him. And even though he was stubborn and difficult to work with, there are very few actors who have been as influential as him. He also had problems in his personal life, and he often felt that the only reason he acted in films was because it was only way he could earn money

He called Elia Kazan a great teacher and claimed that Al Pacino was the greatest actor in the world, and he was a good friend of Jack Nicholson, Karl Malden, Johnny Depp, and Montgomery Clift. He also got along pretty well with Vivien Leigh. And his performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire", "The Godfather", and also "On the Waterfront", "Julius Caesar", and "Last Tango in Paris" were more than just "fine"

It was scary for its time
