Sonic Gamer Yes, there were virtually no access to internet back in the day, and the games give no clue on who the Gym Leader is, so it was a genuine mystery and surprise; the same with your rival being the champion and Mew being a mysterious Pokémon Nowadays, those kinds of twists don't work the same way since the internet gives away too much
