In all fairness, acting is mostly about storytelling and making situations clear and relatable, character work is mostly a bonus. I met an acting teacher who asked his students to literally play themselves, and he said he did that because the audience must believe in you and see that they can replace the character's name with yours. It's also hard to play a character and still staying true to yourself I'm not saying that Kevin Costner and George Clooney are great though, and I love actors who can play a huge variety of characters. However, if I was going to evaluate an actor, I would have looked at these factors: - Chemistry with partner - Presence - Clear subtext in the lines and situations - Process - Physical action - Reaction and impulses

+Jon May Because the following year, Jim Carrey got a Golden Globe nod for "Liar, Liar", and then "The Truman Show" came and proved that Jim Carrey can be just as good as a dramatic actor as he is as a comedic one.

+Nate Rothman This video is from 2013, so pretty much everyone thought Shyamalan's career was over at that point

Fans of the television show hated it

Somebody has obviously not seen "The Truman Show", "Man on the Moon", or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Several people hoped he would be nominated for an Oscar for those movies

If directors are included, then I would have put Michael Cimino for "Heaven's Gate" on this list; all of his movies after that one were box office failures, and he hasn't made a movie since 1996. Many people even became critical to "The Deer Hunter" after watching "Heaven's Gate"

+jean paul franken Yes, even Roger Ebert thought that it was the kind of movie that you won't put amongst the best movies of all time, but is still nice to have seen. I must say that I enjoyed the Universal Studios live show version better than the movie though

***** Well, Marlon Brando said almost the same thing. Quote: "Acting is an empty and useless profession"
1
He retired, and then had a final film appearance in "Sir Billi" in 2012

Fans of the television show "Avatar: The Last Airbender" really hated the movie "The Last Airbender", and the fact that many white actors were casted in the film was very controversial

It may be possible that it almost ruined it, but Jim Carrey quickly got back on the track. After that movie, he appeared in movies like "Liar Liar", "The Truman Show", "Man on the Moon", "How the Grinch stole Christmas", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", which all gave him a Golden Globe nomination (he also won for "The Truman Show" and "Man on the Moon"

That didn't ruin his career for very long when his very next movies were the acclaimed "Liar, Liar", "The Truman Show", and "Man on the Moon"
1
Oh yeah, "ruined" him so hard that his very next movies were "Liar, Liar", "The Truman Show", and "Man on the Moon" for all which he received a Golden Globe nomination (and won for the latter two)
